Ok now that I have been able to extract all the info from my Dtivo the time has come to buy a DVD Burner, but which one? What are some of the things that I need to look for when buying one and does anyone have any suggestions on a specific unit?

Thanks!!

The Pioneer models are very popular for the -R/-RW formats. The Cendyne models are rebadged Pioneers so you can probably get a better price on one of them. The new Sony 500 can record both -R/-RW and +R/+RW formats but can sometimes be pricey and hard to find. My recommendation would be to see which format, if any, is compatible with your DVD player. Most current set top players should be able to handle either format so it really comes down to price and personal preference.

I have the Sony 500 ($250 thanks Dell :D ), but if I need to buy one today I'll try to get the Cendyne 4x for $150. I saw that drive at that price a couple of times after rebate this year. So wait until is at that price again. If you want +R/RW also wait for the new releases and maybe then the prices will fall.

I have the Sony DRU-500A ($250 -- more thanks to Dell) and have been pretty happy with it.

I do most of my burning with Accu 1x DVD-R media which the Sony (using 1.0f at least) can burn at 2x speed. The media is cheap ~$1/disk.

I'm not sure if the Pioneers have any similar tricks up their sleeves.

I have yet to burn a DVD+R or a DVD-RW, but I have made semi-regular usage of DVD+RW.

I've seen explanations posted a number of times why DVD+RW is better than DVD-RW, but I have to admit, it really hasn't sunk in.

If you go with the Sony or Pioneer (rebadged or otherwise) -- you'll be making a fine choice.

I bought the 4 X Cendyne (Pioneer) The unit is available for 150-200 AR with some regularity. I spend the extra $ for 4X media (Ritek 1.75 each). Makes burning go quicker.

newbie, where do you buy the ritek 4x media? i've been meaning to try those.

i've got the cendyne-branded pioneer a05, and i love it. only one coaster in 30 tries, and i'm certain it was just a bad piece of media.

I've bought from www.rima.com and from http://www.hypermicro.com/store/index.htm

Similar prices and service. The way I look at it 1.75 for 4X is cheaper than if I bought 2X media in a local store. The cheaper ritek -R media will only burn at 1X with my unit. I think there is a firmware hack but I don't really want another issue to have to troubleshoot. BTW with CD-R media almost anything works OK, the cheap DVD -R will give you nothing but coasters.

I upgraded to WINXP (from 98SE). Much more stable when burning DVD's.

If you can wait till June the Hitachi GSA-4040B will be out.
It's just like the Sony DRU500 only it can also write DVD-RAM (if that matters to you) but I can almost bet that it will be cheaper than the Sony drive...

No price has been set yet...

Can't go wrong with Pioneer. Found great deals on the A04 on pricewatch, less than $200, and it comes in black which matches my server.

I've bought from www.rima.com and from http://www.hypermicro.com/store/index.htm

I just checked these sites and they're more expensive than any of the ones listed below:

Captain--I agree you'll save on shipping but I don't really see much of a difference between $174 for 100 vs $175.

I listed 2 vendors that I've personally used and had good service from. At least one of the vendors you listed has a history of substituting brands.

I think the companies you list support my original post, $1.75 is the going price for Ritek -R 4X. Plenty of vendors to pick from.

Captain which of those companies do you use?

I've ordered from both Meritline and All Media Outlet with no problems. I had been looking for some different discs than what you had talked about and noticed a larger price differential than you did on the 4X Riteks. Sorry about the confusion. The prices I've seen on Riteks seem to be pretty consistent from one vendor to the next so I couldn't recommend one over the other. I basically go with the best price I can find.

If a dealer is substituting one brand for another then you should be able to get them to exchange your order for the correct one. I'd read any fine print before placing an order if you feel that this may happen to you. It seems to me that if you order a specific brand other than one advertised as a house brand then you should cetainly have the right to bitch about it to the vendor and expect the error to be corrected to your satisfaction. Would you like to share the info about which vendor you feel is problematic in this regard? I'm sure we'd all be interested in that little tidbit of info.

Captain--I picked my vendors based on posts from
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27

I've never ordered from meritline but some people seem to have problems with them substituting brands. I'm sure they'll take a return/exchange but must be a PITA. BTW meritline and supermedia seem to be the same company.

The prices (for what I buy) are all the same. I only order from a vendor that shows they have it in stock. I used vendors that were recommended by people in that forum. I'm sure most of the vendors are about the same.

I'm looking on Dell's website and I can't find the Sony Burner for sale.

Was that a limited time offer? Or is there a secret place to order it from for $250?

thanks!

I've purchased Ritek G03's from both www.rima.com and www.supermediaoutlet.com without any problems. Checked the discs and they were correct..4x media is still too expensive IMHO...

I don't buy anything but Riteks anymore just because I know they are really good quality for the price. Never a coaster and G03's burn at 2x on my Sony DRU500AX and I haven't had any problems with degrading media or pixleation that some have seen from really cheap stuff like Princos, etc. Not bad for $1.10 each. Not the cheapest, but cheaper than anything you can get at the local store...
