View Full Version : In-circuit flash of 39 prom?

I know most of the S2s out there have the 37 prom that is not programmable in the Tivo. However, there are some with 39s that are supposedly able to be in circuit programmable. Did anyone ever pursue this? I've got a S2 with a 39 that I'd like to hack, but of course would much rather do it via a software flash instead of socketing my prom if at all possible. I'm currently running a hacked 3.0 so I definately have the ability to program it in the tivo if its possible and if anybody has written the utility to do it. Thanks.

there are some reports of being able to do so. however, no one has release the needed program to do it.

Hi, I'm still looking for a hackable version of the
SA series 2 software. Could you help me?
Thanks, pcompact

forgive my ignorance, but why couldn't we simply modify /prom/TiVoProm.bin and run
getprom -Update /prom/TiVoProm.bin to accomplish this? Is it because the prom that comes in the HDVR2 is not flashable? If so, why does rc.sysinit try to run this command to verify the prom image in the first place?

the prom in the hdvr2 and most s2 units is not in circuit flashable based on current info.
and even if it was, you would have to re-write getprom to flash the chip, since AFAIK the getprom on the s2 wont flash anyway.

that's what I had thought, but then do you have any idea why rc.sysinit tries to call getprom -Update /prom/TiVoProm.bin on the HDVR2?

the rc.sysinit is not architecture specific (thats what rc.arch is for). because of that, there are a few things which do stuff on a series 1 unit, but dont do anything on other units.

I suspect that the existing flasher software will actually work. The only reason that it doesn't is because of how the flash hardware is implemented on the motherboard.
In case it doesn't, I do have completely working source for flashing the '39's.
