probably a simple question, but I haven't found the answer yet.
The hard drive in my DSR6000 went bad, so I am about to install a new one. This time I want to get into using some of the hacks, so I made a serial cable.
If I boot my laptop from the 2.5xtreme CD with the serial cable plugged into the DSR6000, will I be able to make changes to the newly installed harddrive? Or do I have to use a program like Teraterm??
Thanks

ok booting off the CD will give you a way to install the OS onto the new drive(s). Then after you install the software, place it(them) into your tivo to allow it to flash your prom as well as set its self up. one it gets setup, you can then take them back out again and reinstall them into you PC (not laptop) and update to 2.5.2 or 3.1 or whatever you wish.
To use the cable you have to already have the Tivo setup and working. You use teraterm with its default settings and you can send commands directly to the tivo once you hook it up. Just hit enter once and you will find your bash prompt.
SO - quick recap, to install the 2.5xtreme on the new HD(s) you NEED to have the HD in a PC that can boot via cdrom, not a laptop because you can't hook up the HD's to the laptop when booting to the CD. But you can use your laptop to link into the tivo once the setup is completed.
I'm new here but I'm pretty sure thats how it works.

OK...
I already have the Tivo hacked and working with XTreme2.5, but I want to also do 3 things:
1. get showcases and tivomag
2. fix the ppv thing where you cant record until the movie starts
3. get the 900 locals
So I need to install Teraterm to my laptop and use it to send the necessary commands to the Tivo?
Is Teraterm the easiest one to use? I noticed references to several different terminal programs.
Thanks

Well TTerm is great. It has all the required features you need to send files EASILY back and forth. I'd say enjoy it as its really good.
About the other hackes, I'm not sure about them. Search for "locals" and you will find info on them and about PPV, no idea, sorry.
