hey fellas-

i recently got a turbonet and i just downloaded "superzaps 3.1 tivolator Upgrade including xPlusz". now on my dtivo i previously have installed xtreme v2.5 and it has been working great.

so i'm going to be upgrading it using this download to v2.5.2 and then i'm planning on using my turbonet card for tivoweb, ftp stuff, and downloading the guide data.

my question has to do with the downloading of the guide...

i know with xtreme v2.5 the guide is downloaded via the stream coming in from the dish. this requires that i have nothing plugged into the phone line (which is a good thing...) now when i upgrade it, will it automatically use my turbonet card to get the guide data? or is this something that needs to be turned on?

also where does it get the guide data? does it contact tivo at all? i want to avoid this, so if it does have to contact tivo to download the guide via turbonet, can i turn this feature off and continue getting it from the stream? as in the previous xtreme v2.5?

thanks alot for the help guys!

All DirecTiVos get their guide data from the sat data stream. The phone call to the TiVo service just verifies the TiVo subscription (pre-v3.1.0), downloads any software upgrades and gets some data which enables the ability to get Showcases, Ads, etc. (also comes via the sat data stream).
Turbonet support comes with the v2.5.2/v3.1.0 xupgrade. If you don't want the phone line connected, activate the xPlusz NOPHONE option with command #21,1. Other options to use with the turbonet are TIVOWEB, TELNET and TIVOFTPD.

Ok. Thanks for the help. I just have a few more little questions now...

So what exactly then, would the TurboNet be used to get from Tivo? Anything at all? Would the TurboNet just try to act as the phone once did, and "verifiy the TiVo subscription (pre-v3.1.0), download any software upgrades, etc..."? In that case I want it off, so i'd use the NOPHONE, right?

Also right now the modem is inactive, not making any calls at all. (intially after installing xtremev2.5 i typed a command at the prompt which makes the tivo work without calling in...) When I upgrade will I have to use the NOPHONE option, (because it will be reset back to normal, during the upgrade) or will it just continue to be inactive since I had already typed that command before?

I just want to continue on with TurboNet being functional, but not making any calls out to Tivo or anyone else. Only me being able to use it for TivoWeb, and TivoFTPD.

Thanks again for the help! Btw, after reading through these forums quite a bit i've come to realize superzap is omniscient...:D

With xupgrade and turbonet, there won't be any phone calls that connect unless you connect a phone line or if using v3.1.0 enter the call prefix of ,#401

thanks again...

one last question at the risk of being annoying...

is that because of what i have previously typed at the bash to make the unit work without being connected to a phone line? or because turbonet will never make any calls to tivo or anyone else (meaning its just normal for turbonet not to, and has nothing to do with what i previously typed at the bash)?

thanks so much! you cleared it up a ton for me!

What did you previously type at the bash? Was it touch /etc/SubTest? That will allow your lifetime sub to be kept active without phone calls on v2.5/v2.5.2. This is similar to xPlusz NOPHONE. It won't necessarily prevent your turbonet from connecting to the tivo service. DirecTV calls are separate and go out only via the phone line.

The turbonet support that comes with the xupgrade is not exactly the same as the silicondust install and works like I previously described. To recap:
v2.5.2 xupgrade - no connection to tivo service via turbonet
v3.1.0 xupgrade - no connection to tivo service unless you put the string ,#401 in the dial prefix.
