1. you need to boot to linux to use the filesystem.
2. the upgrade cd's are BOOTABLE ISO's or the images are made with MFSTOOLS 1.0 or 2.0.
The cd's or images you will throw onto the drive are available as ISO's for bootable linux kernals with the image and a shortcut to run the install.
you need your primary master configured to your current hard drive if possible, unplug all but on CDrom, and attach the drive from the tivo to your primary slave position on the cable.
Primary slave will be seen as /dev/hdb... hdb = primary slave.
It'll install and give you directions to umount -f -a -r and reboot and you boot the drive in your unit.
Only the Xtreme 2.5 (non-upgrade) from Surgeon will also flash your PROM, which is needed to run 2.5 or 2.5.2 or 3.1. If you run a 2.5 image on a 2.0 unit, it will not boot.
So start with the 2.5 cd and see how that goes, if y our happy with that apply whatever hacks you need to work with or install the XUPGRADE.ISO, which you use nero to burn to a cd to boot from, and that will get you almost up to date.

Burn the ISO to a CD-R and set in your bios to boot from bootable cd-roms, move the boot priority up to the cdrom before the hd, and make sure no floppy is in the floppy(if you have one anymore)
The cd you burn will be a bootable linux cd with the images and tools needed to use it...
but all the work has been done and all you need to do is execute the command and answer questions.

does it say decompressior errors @ 93%?
Try burning the CD rom slower like 8x, the image must be exact and a good download and a good slow burn.
