I have ben struggling with a used tivo. I finally got to the dial in menu by bypassing the clock diag checks in the init file.

I managed to get the bash prompt enabled, a cable made, and teraterm to talk to it.

The problem is that after the almost there message, the screen goes blank and then I get the fancy background and asking me for use dial out or dealer demo. At that point, I get garbage dumped to the comms package and the bashprompt goes inactive. The tivo itself continues functioning, waitingfor me to dial in for a subscription I guess. I can select menues, so the tivo is ok, just the bash locked out.

I am beginning to think I need to maybe reload the tivo software, but I can't get far enough to display software versions, etc - so

1) what software version do I load? It is a series 1 Sony VSR-2000 (made in Nov 2001) with a 40 Gb maxtor in it. I do not know if I can sub since I am in Kanada so I may have to just use it as a dumb video/security recorder if I am able. Does that have a bearing on the software version I load onto it?

2) Does anyone know what may be causing this crud to be output and locking the bash? Did I maybe forget to do something?

3) what happns if I chose the dealer demo? What does it do and do I kill my tivo if I select it? No mention of it in the manual, but if you select it you get a warning about demo mode.

I suspect these are dumb questions, but if you have never had it running to know, maybe not...

TIA...:p
