Instead of getting a bash prompt off the tivo and changing files around, can I just mount the drive to my Linux box and do what I need to do that way?

yes, but your linux install must support tivo partitions. one method is to recompile your kernel after patching the kernel source. the other is to use the mfstools bootdisk and put files on after booting. you can mount windows drives under the mfstools bootdisk
