View Full Version : Replace B drive with standard IDE drive?

I have the "stuttering" video/audio on my DSR6k and I believe it is the B drive that is the culprit. I want to go and buy a new drive locally and replace it, leaving the A drive alone. Will the system recognize the new drive if I do this?
Thanks for any help.

You'll probably have to make a combined backup of both drives and then restore it to the current A drive with the new B drive installed in your PC at the same time. You'll end up losing all of your recordings this way. The only way I can think of that would enable you to salvage any current recordings owuld be to do a direct copy of both existing drives onto two new drives or one large drive that is at least as large as the combined capacity of your current drives. Check Hinsdale's How To to see if there's any way around this because I don't want to lead you down the wrong path if you can salvage your recordings.

CV, thanks for your quick reply. You are always the first to reply to my questions.
I don't care if we save anything or not...just trying to get tivo back up quickly. I ordered a replacement 120GB A drive overnight from an ad on Ebay and it came in DOA so now I am back where I started from. I have put both old drives back in and it is working (somewhat). Can't I just replace the B with a virgin IDE drive, configured as the slave in the system and have it work (like the B is set now). Or could I restrap the A drive as a single drive even though it is only 15GB, as a temporary fix?

If you are replacing the B drive with the same size drive, you can dd the old to the new and drop it in, as it will be an exact copy. Or you can create a divorced image of the two drives and restore that to a single drive (in the mfstool and Hinsdale how to).
