Usidng a TIVO with a dead modem as a recorder

The modem burnt out on my Philips HDR 112 for the second time a couple of months and I bought a new one. I would now like to use the 1st one as a manual recorder but the TIVO comes on in set-up mode and I can't find a way to get out of it. Is there a way to bypass the setup mode or is there a oatch I can get for the software to allow manual operation. I don't really want to have the modem repaired again.
