View Full Version : Using fixup02c on a Standalone TIVO to get rid of Nag screens

I have two S1 Tivos (Philips & Sony) that I am trying to get to work as standalone recorders (no program data), but after two very frustrating days, I'm having little success.

The first thing I tried to do was load TIVO Software version 1.3 on both of them. Everything seemed to work properly and the software loaded, but anytime I tried to watch live TV, the TIVOs would reboot themselves. I tried numerous iterations and evern re-downloaded the images several times to make sure they weren't corrupt. No matter what I did, both TIVOs would reboot whenever I selected Live TV. I was about to give up, and I started reading up on khmann's fixup02c script.

After loading 2.01 software onto my Philips and verifying that it worked, I connected via a serial cable and got a bash prompt. I was able to successfully load and execute the script, and it appears that the settings were changed appropriately (lifetime subscription, daily call made, etc); however, I was still getting the nag screen saying that there is no program data (I don't want program data!).

So, I loaded my original philips 3.0 image and now am having trouble getting to the Bash prompt. It is stopping right before the prompt would appear under version 2.01 and it doesn't seem like I can do anything. My intention was to run the fixup30 script to see if it got rid of the nag screen.

I intend to keep trying, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get rid of the nag screen on a Series 1 standalone TIVO. I do not want the guide data, I just want to be able to hit the record button and have things record (I know it will only do 30 minutes if I don't schedule the recording); and I want to get rid of all the nag screens. I already have service on a Series 2 Tivo, and don't want to pay for more service just to use my TIVO on a separate TV if I don't want the guide data.

Both TIVOs that I am working with have not had a subscription on them for over 6 months.

My primary question is how to get rid of the nag screens. In trying to answer this question, I have come up with the following questions:

- Why won't 1.3 images work (I tried 2 images on 2 different TIVOs)?

- Why can't I get to a Bash prompt under 3.0 (I would check the other TIVO Community forum, but it is currently down).

- Am I on the right track with fixup02c? If so, what else do I need to do? Add some fake program data? If so, how to do this?

I really have searched these forums and can't find a definitive answer to these questions. I really am a newbie to TIVO hacking. I added an extra drive to my Series 2, but that's about it. I am a computer guy, but don't know much about Linux.

Thanks,
Scott

Well, I figured out the answer to one of my above questions - the Bash Shell problem. Before today, I had only connected to my TIVO when it was running version 2.01 of the software. Therefore, I assumed that 2.5 and 3.0 would be the same and that a shell should be present.

I figured out my mistake, and added the shell. I then ran the fixup25.tcl script.

My TIVO is beaving slightly better than it did before I started this ordeal...I'm not getting the nag screens anymore. However, I am still not able to record by pressing the record button. It just makes the TIVO error sound instead.

I really think I need some fake guide data in there. Is there a script anywhere that can put some bogus guide data in the system? I would guess the script would need to be run once every two weeks to keep refreshing the fake data.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really am trying to figure this out on my own, but a lot of the posts on this forum require knowledge that I don't yet have in order to understand them.

Thanks,
Scott

This is rather embaressing, but I will report it so that the next person with this question can find the answer.

The final key to getting this to work was actually plugging a TV signal into the TIVO! I was working with it all this time with no signal going into the TIVO. I assumed that the TIVO would attempt to record even if it didn't have a signal to read. Now that I plugged it in to the cable, the instant record button worked! I feel really stupid for not trying this sooner.

Hopefully I won't have any more problems.

What version software were you using when it actually worked flawlessly.

Where did you download the invalid 1.3 image from.

ftp.abs.net?????

I was using version 2.5 when it worked. I'm still getting one nag screen a day, but its a lot better than a nag screen any time I try to do anything.

I did get the 1.3 images from ABS.NET. I tried both of the images that are there and neither worked for me. I have to assume that they are valid images and something is slightly different about my setup because I did read that several people had used them.

Could you list some of the steps you took to hack your tivo? I have been looking around for this one the SA units.

Thanks
