I have a Hughes Direct Tivo and I am trying to get shows onto my PC. I have gotten as far as getting a working Bash Prompt and I can FTP into the tivo. I am trying to get tystudio to work. I installed on my windows XP and it installed fine but it will not get the "Now Showing" from my tivo. I think there are some more files that I need to download to get it to work on my tivo and PC but I have not been able to locate them in one spot. If some one could give me a link to the right location or PM me with instructions on how to do this that would be great. Also I am told that I need to install a descrambler for the direct tv put if you could also let me know how to correctly install this that would be great. Everytime I try the next time I reboot the tivo it says "Can Not boot Kernel" I have not touched the rc.sysinit file but after I extract the file it must some how corrupt the kernel. I do not know that much about linux so if you could make it easy that would be exceptionally helpful. thanks

I'd recommend starting off by reading the DTivo Hacking FAQ in the main DirecTV Tivo Hacking Forum. This should get you on the right track. You will also notice that there are sticky threads at the top of the main forums. These contain answers to the most widely talked about topics and is the best place to start to find the answers you seek. Instructions on transferring files and setting up scripts or other hacks are contained in the aforementioned threads and FAQ. Based on your questions, you've got a lot of reading to do before you try to go any further. If you can't find the answer to a specific question then try using the search function. Display your results as posts instyead of threads so you don't have to wade through countless posts to find the answer.

thanks for the reply in the day or so since I left this post I have been able to do a lot more on the tivo. But I still have one problem that I have not been able to find any where. When they say edit your rc.sysinit file to load programs automatically I can not find the right commands to do this. They make it sound so easy that all you have to type is a line but this does not seem to work. If anybody could give me a hint on how to make things in the tivo load automatically that woudl be great. Otherwise I will just experiament some more.

I would definitely be careful about editing your rc.sysinit file if you don't know what you're doing. You can quickly render your DTivo useless if you screw it up. You can recover from it but you have to know how in order to get yourself up and running again. If you do get adventurous and decide to edit it then make a backup of the file before you start and remember to save the changes and set the attributes (i.e. make it executable) if it isn't already, although it should be. I mentioned this because a preferred method of editing any Tivo OS files is to transfer a copy of the file to your PC first and edit it using TextPad and then save it in Unix format. When the file is transferred back to the Tivo it is no longer executable and must have the permissions set using the chmod command. Otherwise, the Tivo won't boot up and you'll be stuck on the Welcome screen forever.
I would recommend installing 2.5Xtreme and then install Superzap's 2.5.2 or 3.1 upgrade to Xtreme. You'll have all of the hacks you'll need for Turbonet, ftp, telnet, nophone, and many others. You'll still have to manually install the files to use TyStudio's tyserver and tyindexer or TyTools NowShowing.tcl and tserver_mfs6 or any other extraction utilities you want to use. None of them are difficult to install or set up but you'll still need to read up on them before attempting to install and use them.
