I just installed a new drive into my Tivo and also the Turbonet card. Telnet and ftp are working fine. I have a few questions about some other things I'd like to do. Forgive me if these topics have been covered in previous threads.
I have a Hughes Dtivo GXCEBOT with the 3.1 software.

1. If I want to extract video (using tytool), I will need to do some form of noscramble mod, correct? I'm a little wary about hacking the kernel but that seems to be the easiest way instead of installing a noscramble module. Does the noscramble DD hack work on a 3.1 Dtivo? I've seen discussion of 3.0 but didn't see 3.1.

2. How do I get simple *nix commands like "ls" in a bash shell? I know there are some but having ability to list a directory would be alot more helpful.

Again, I aplogise for asking questions that have already been covered. I tried searching for "ls" but it falls below the minimum length allowed for searching.
TIA,
John

Noscramble should work fine on 3.1. Check this out for info on setting up the noscramble mod:

Check the 2nd post in this thread for info on Linux commands and your Tivo:

If you haven't already done so I'd recommend checking out the DTivo Hacking FAQ in the DTivo hacking forum. The How Tos Only sticky threads contain a wealth of info and links for performing any Tivo hacks or mods.

Thanks for your reply. I looked through those threads and did find some info I was unaware of but still haven't found how to install simple commands like "ls" or "ps" without installing one of the OS upgrades. I'm hoping to keep my OS on the box as original as possible. Is there a way to install linux commands without having to install one of the different full upgrades? I'm pretty well versed in *nix commands and what they do but the default bash shell that comes with the OS doesn't seem to have much.
Thanks,
J

I downloaded the Xtreme upgrade and then extracted the ISO and also some of the TAR files inside and then sent the command I was looking for via ftp into the bin directory which is similar to what the xtreme upgrade does anyways. I was just hoping to keep my OS as pure as possible but it's almost impossible to do anything without simple commands like "ls" etc.

I don't see any reason to want to keep your Tivo OS completely virgin but that's certainly your choice. You won't be able to do much of anything in the way of mods or hacks if you do. I would suggest making a backup image of your "virgin" OS using MFS Tools 2.0 and the intructions in Hinsdale's How To. Then, have yourself a ball and start hacking the daylights out of your DTivo to get the maximum enjoyment from it. You can always restore the drive back to virgin status at any time. Start by installing 2.5Xtreme and then add Superzap's upgrade to either 2.5.2 or 3.1. The TurboNet drivers are included along with lots of other goodies so virtually everything is already done for you. All you have to do is activate the scripts or hacks you want using your remote and the xPlusz commands.

My main logic behind keeping it as virgin as possible is that if Tivo/DirecTV ever updates the software anymore, it will still work without having to possibly restore it from an image. I understand that the xtreme upgrades are just forced OS upgrades basically but if I keep as close to original as possible, there is less to go wrong if/when there are Tivo/DirecTV updates. I was only really interested in the following applications anyway which I have gotten all to work.
YAC
Tivo-web
Video Extraction with Tytool.
Those seem to be the coolest apps so far IMHO.
