Can anyone give me pointers to how to hack my DirecTiVo (Sony SAT T60 w/3.1) from a PowerMac G4 running Mac OS X 10.2.x?

I just got my TurboNet card and Torx screwdriver, but I haven't popped the cover yet. There seem to be so many different instructions on how to install the TurboNet, most of which seem to require burning a Linux or Windows bootable CD in order to install Telnet onto the Tivo's hard drive. Is this necessary? Is there some other way to do it with a Mac?

Thanks!

I am sorry I had the same problem. There seems to be no direct answers to getting the software on the tivo harddrive for the mac. I am sure you have a friend that has a pc it wil only take about an hour to do. If you want to only run daily calls form tivo then you don't need to install any software. Just use the backdoor code. If you want to run tivoweb and extraction your going to need a pc to get started only. I have now extracted video from tivo with a mac g4 and 10.2.5 and x11. With tystudio. Hopefully I will burn a dvd soon.
If you need more help pm me.
Wish I knew how to write code. There seems to be a large number of mac users here.

Well, I got the TurboNet installed last night, with the daily calls going out through my DSL connection. I tried doing ping, telnet, ftp, http and portscan to the 3.1 DirecTiVo but it looks like they really do have it locked down pretty tight. Only the ping came back. Pretty much what I exepected, but I figured I'd try.

The next option I'm looking at is buying a replacement drive that has all of the interesting (telnet, ftp, TiVoWeb, etc.) software already installed. So far the only thing I've found is a $400, 120GB kit that also includes the TurboNet card, which I don't need. (http://www.ptvupgrade.com/site/products/product_detail.asp?product_code=DR%2D109%2DTN). Does anybody know of a cheaper replacement drive that has all of the interesting software installed? I'm hoping for something $150 or less.

Thanks!

All you need is 10 minutes with a PC and a copy of Dylan's Boot Disk on floppy (or any other tivo tools disk, MFS Tools is useful to have). And a plan.

If you have a DTivo, you'll need to reflash the drive following the Turbonet install instructions.

Then all you should need to do is add these 2 lines:

tnlited 23 /bin/bash -login &
/sbin/tivoftpd

To /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

Pop it back in the tivo, and you'll be able to telnet and ftp to it. Everything else can be installed from there.

If you want to add a 2nd drive, there is a MacTiVoBlesser app. The OS 9 version is the most ***** proof.

If you want to add 2 bigger drives, make a backup, etc, well, you'll probably want a PC around. Look on ebay for a junk box... my junk PC has no memory (I just borrow a chip from my Mac), and no hard drives (you don't need them). You could probably dumpster dive for the kind of PC you need, and return it to where it belongs after you're done ;)

Alternately, I think someone around somewhere has added the tivo file system to Mac OS X... check sourceforge or something if you really want to avoid PC contamination.

Paying $400 for a pre-hacked drive is a time saver, but it won't help you learn how to install new bleeding edge hacks, and it really isn't necessary... you could probably get a PC box for $40 for the 10 minutes you'll need it.
