Well Im not sure which Tivo unit to go with... maybe some of you guys (professionals in the field) can possibly give me insight to which Tv Unit will fill my needs..
Im not too picky on what i want to do with my unit..
All I pretty much want is to add another HDD, and use the
Tivo service to record shows and watch them later..
thats pretty much it... I dont want to run a server or anything..
Just watch TV and record lots of shows...
But I also have another problem.. I live in a place where I cannot
use the tivo dialing service (subscription problem..)
Im not asking for any hacking information on how to bypass this..
but which Tivo Unit will supply my needs?
I just need a decent... (not the top notch.. but it doesn't matter)
Tivo Unit that will allow me to alter my subscription because of where I live, and to add a second HDD
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
thank you very much

Well, you've pretty much narrowed down the field by specifying your use of an Hu card. I'm assuming that you intend to get a DirecTivo based on this and not a standalone unit or at least use it with a DTV receiver. If DTV is going to be your sole source of programming then a series 1 DTivo is what you need. I believe the series 2 units can only be used with a P4 card but never having owned one I can't say for sure. I'm not all that up to speed on series 2 DTivos yet but a series 1 model will definitely do what you're asking. The Sony, Philips, and Hughes models are all identical internally so pick the one you like.

How can I tell which tivo unit will be a DTivo Series 1 Unit?
And out of the brands that make the series 1 will they all let me do what i am looking for? (subscription bypass)
thanks a ton (im just starting out on all of this :) )

That is a stand alone model. No card needed but a phone line subscription needed to get the guide data. Since you want to add a hard drive anyway you should review Hinsdale How to upgrade your hard drive FAQ

Wow nice layout of information!
thanks a grip..
The main reason I want to bypass sub is my use of a hu card..
:( any off hand info you could pass down? or possibly redirect me to a place which handles this certain info?

Which model would you pick for the plethera of hacks?
I was thinking about the Sony2000
but i dunno..
You'll need a series 1 DirecTivo. The Sony SAT-T60, Philips DSR6000, and Hughes GXCEBOT are all identical internally. The Philips and Hughes use the exact same remote. The Sony uses a unique set of remote codes and has a different remote. Other than cosmetic differences in the faceplates, all three are identical.
The Sony SVR2000 is a Stand Alone model. Does not have a built in reciever like the T60, DSR6000 or GXCEBOT

i currently have Direct TV, would i need the standalone models to get all my viewing recorded or would i need to purchase a directivo? basically would a standalone be enough to be hacked so that it receives information from the direct tv box i have.
