I posted this earlier, but the moderators deleted the thread --- probably because 9th tee is a forum sponsor
Hmmmm...
Interesting post by Lou (PTVUpgrade) in that thread...
...the product he is offering is not the same as the true TurboNet cards available from 9thTee and PTVupgrade; the boards he copied are 'beta' versions and there is a problem with the initial design which was corrected in the final release.
Caveat emptor!

Yep. I emailed them out that statement asking for their response.
I hope its not true as mine is on the way.

The link to xtremetivo on anandtech appears to fail, can someone PM me the correct site link?

you were able to get www.xtremetivo.com? The name doesn't resolve for me (or any other dns server I point to).

I sent an email asking what version the board was.
He replied "The board is the new 2.5Ver"

It seems the xtremetivo "tivo network adapter" is an illegal copy of the TurboNET. It appears that they (xtremetivo) stole the design of the turbonet and are benefiting by the subsequent turbonet association, use of the turbonet driver and turbonet support channels.
You might want to read the following thread:
$36 TurboNet, too good to be true? (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?threadid=260031)

How could these cheaper cards be considered "un-ethical" when 9th tee sells drive upgrade kits which theoretically screw Tivo themselves out of the retail markup on the larger drive tivos?

Its very different for several reasons:
1) the "TurboNet" clones are illegal; copyrighted microcode was used in their production. this is copyright infringement
2) disk drive upgrades are legal, period.
3) not only are they legal, there is nothing unethical about it. TiVo makes money selling their service; they do not make money selling larger TiVo units. TiVo has no issues with folks offering upgraded drives for expansion of TiVo systems. In fact, they've been quite supportive of it -- its good for business and helps keep customers loyal when they know there is an upgrade path.
There is no comparison that can be made between the illegal actions of xtremetivo and what 9thTee and PTVupgrade offer. My post on anandtech was appropriate; the thread was subsequently closed by the moderators to diminish the publicity given to xtremetivo.
It probably would be best for me to not even reply to this thread, however the actions of legitimate upgrade companies should not be construed as anything similar to what was suggested here.
Sincerely,
Lou Jacob

Thanks for elaborating on that lou... I was not sure how the drive upgrades were shipped out - whether or not they had the tivo software oin the drive already or not. If they do have the software on the drive or even on a CD would that not be violating Tivo copyrights?

Its entirely off-topic, however the answer to that question is "no" it is not a violation of TiVo copyrights. TiVo's software is distributed under the GPL.

I don't think the tivo software is distrubuted under the GPL buddy, perhaps their kernel modifications and any modifications to GPLed code are, but not the archiving, playback, scheduling, etc code... no way that isn't copyrighted. (If it is GPL where is the source for it?)

Once again, off-topic...
Well, "buddy" you are wrong... Have you read the GPL? If you have, read it again, and play close attention to the verbiage associated with 'derivative' and 'separate' works, as well as rights of distribution.
If your claims are that there is something inherently illegal or unethical with what we have been doing for the past three years, then I suggest you start a new thread, with the appropriate subject, so people have a chance to read and respond to it.
You will find that not only is our distribution of TiVo's software legal, it embraces the spirit of the GPL in its purest sense.

PS You'll also notice that the folks at xtremetivo.com are no longer selling their product. Wonder why?
