My does the hard drive run all the time. It seems that the drive would wear out a lot sooner and generate a lot of heat.

When's the last time your hard drive stopped spinning in your desktop PC? Startup/spindown is harder on a drive than just spinning. And since the Tivo is always recording to the buffer, it's impossible for it to stop the drives anyway.

When I turn my computer off the hard drive stop. I dont leave my computer on 24/7

And how much work can you do on the computer when the computer is off? Point is, spinning disks are a fact of life for operating computers.
