I have been doing some research on upgrading the hdvr2. i have pieced together that i need to get a 3.1 u5 image. then take out the drive, hook it up to my PC, bootup linux and do some moving and copying on the drive. then hook it up to the tivo. then use a serial cable from the PC to the TiVo and setupd drivers to enable USb ethernet access. that is my ultimate goal. from there add tivo web and such. So, what I need to know is a starting point to get the tivo drive all prepped. I have the u5 image. but my desktop and laptop both run XP. am i out of luck?

I think you're okay but to be honest, I do my hacks out of another box running Win98SE. Once I switch my drive back into the HDVR2, I run teraterm for my bash prompt out of the XP box and that's not a problem.

You need to boot from the MFStools2 (the johnnydeath) boot CD to start the process working. Since this is a linux boot, I think having XP on your main drive won't be a problem. I've posted a link to MFStools2 files elsewhere in this section and there are indirect links in MrB51's post on hacking the HDVR2. Also, you don't need the U5 version if you have a hacked prom and have replaced the init.rd. If you haven't done that, I'm not sure how long you can go without being involuntarily upgraded. Maybe someone else knows the answer to that.

I have seen how to replace the init.rd. But I have not seen any info on a hacked prom. is it a hacked version of the 151? If so where to obtain? email at webmaster@hackvp.com if this type of into is not tolerated on this board. thanks!

eh? hacking the prom is a perfectly viable topic for this board. if you have a hacked prom, then you use a different set of instructions, and can use whatever version of the software you want. also, the version numbers for tivo only matter for the stuff before the first dash. everything after the first dash relates to what type of tivo the software is built for

doesnt a hacked prom require surface mount soldering? If so that is NOT the way that I want to go. I have seen some members of this board just use the U5 image and put then along with some extra things to keep the TiVo from updating. This sounding right? So with all the pieced together information on this board, what I want to do sounds posible by just pulling out the drive and doing some formating and scripting and putting it back in?
