Hi Gang,

What's everyone using as a nice "quiet" drive in their HDVR2 or Series 2 DirecTivos?

It seems the Seagate Barracuda IV's are the quietest drives out there.

Has anyone compiled specs on the various models out there (esp. 120Giggers).

Thanks!
Mck.

The Seagates are extrodinarily quiet and I've also had a real good experience with the Samsung spinpoint 5400 and 7200 drive.

I think the Seagates are a little quieter, but the Samsung 5400 sure does run cooler.

I can't vouch for the quietness of the drives since all of my DTivos are in my finished basement and my furnace is right behind where I sit (the fan drowns out any noise the DTivos make). Everything I've been reading so far indicates that the Seagates are the drives of choice for quietness because of their liquid bearings. Best Buy has Seagates on sale this week, if you can find them in stock. I just picked up a 120GB Seagate Barracuda for $139 plus it has a $50 rebate for a final price of $89 plus tax. The 40GB and 80GB models are also on sale with rebates (one rebate per household). If you check the Best Buy website for their latest flyer it indicates that the drives are not available for on-line order or pickup so you need to check each store for availability. I've got several BB's near me and I found the 120 gigger at the 2nd store I checked. Make sure you get the correct model because they also carry a 120GB model with serial ATA interface for $189. CompUSA also has 120GB Maxtors on sale this week for (I believe) $79.

I just got a Maxtor 120 gig at BB for $100 (after rebate). It's pretty quiet. It has those fluid dynamic barrings that I've heard about.
