Hope this isn't a stupid question, I want run midupdate but don't have a serial cable or tivoweb yet. Can I put the drive in my computer and transfer it directly. If I can what should i use to tranfer the files and where Should I put them. Thanks for the help

You can put files like midupdate.tcl in the /var/hack directory of the active partition. You might really want to invest in a serial cable as it will make the tweaking process easier rather than pulling the drive out each time.

i am planning on buying a turboweb card from 9th tee. That should make it a lot easier. I just have to wait a couple weeks. Is there a FAQ on what syntax to use when transfering file from drive to drive in linux. Iam a rookie at this.

Might want to take a look at some of the "stickys", it's a pretty easy process to use a ZMODEM TRANSFER in TeraTerm or some other terminal software you might prefer. On the TiVo side, just enter the "rz" command (no quotes) in the directory you want to send the file to, to have the unit await a file tranfer. The rest is done with the terminal software.

Here is some additional info from the "HowTos Only" sticky above ...
