View Full Version : Ok. A curiosity on my part. How is TyTool pronounced by the rest of you?

The subject says it all. I was just wondering how you say it. I met with a few users a while back and that say it differently than I do. So I was wondering how you all say it in your heads when you read here on the forum.
Not sure how to make a poll so bear with me in case I do this wrong. But the 2 options are:
1- T-Y-Tool - said distinctly. T - Y - Tool.
2- Tie-Tool - said like Tie Fighter. Tie - Tool.
I am just curious...

See. That is interesting to me. I have always said it T-Y-Tool (#1). I don't know why that is just how it came out for me. Until I met with some local users it never even occured to me to pronounce it the other way.

It's just like I call a .GIF file "Jiff" like the peanut butter. And I hear some people call'm a "Giff", like in the word 'gift'. Or a .BIN file, I used to call them "Bine", short for binary. But others, and me recently, now call them a "Bin" file, which is what the word spells.

Yes. I do. But then I created it and named it... So I get to pick how I say it. :)

Just a comment on this totally OT thing:
In the old days, I used to incorrectly call a system operator (SYSOP) a "SY SOP" all together, as oppsed to a SYS OP.
The same kinda holds true for GIF, which is short for Graphic Interchange Format, therefore the hard G sound (like "gift" or "Graphic") is appropriate.
However, now I question why *I* say bin instead of BINE, because it IS short for BINARY.....
hrumph...
Weird indeed.....

Yes you do. But as an act of phonetic rebellion, I shall continue my (Mental) tradition of calling it "TIE TOOL" at least until the spelling is changed to "TYtool" or "TY-Tool" instead of the current "TyTool" :D
Edit: Whew! things must be really slow at work for me today.

I never gave it any thought that it could be pronounced any other way.
But then I say tamoate and you say tomatoe
LOL.
It is all a matter of dialect.
Linux (le-nux, ly-nicks)
Unix (ewe-nicks, uw-nicks)
Windows (win-dows, win-dears) Sorry im form Texas, couldn’t resist.
Then of course go to the UK and ask them to say:
Aluminum
Schedule
Or go to Canada and ask them to say:
Out
About
Exactly
as for Tee-Why-Tool, well......

definitely #2 - tie tool. never even though of t-y-tool
oh yeah:
.bin -> like ben in "big ben"
.gif -> like the peanut butter
shall we now start a thread to see how these are pronounced?
sql
ioctl
exe

Torg, Linux is lin-uks officially (soft i)

Ty is also the name of a person, pronouced "Tie". I would never call him "Tee Why".
Computer tradition is to pronounce things more as they are, not based on what they represent.
Others:
Linux = Len-icks (if I recall, there is a soundbite of Linus pronouncing it like this)
bin = ben
etc = Ok, I say e-t-c, but a unix guy here says et-cee
gif = like gift, without the "t"
lib = like lid, only with a "b"
usr = user. Yes, I actually say "user". I would like to know what other say for that.
And I remember saying "SY-SOP" early on, too!
There's probably many others.
Do you say ESS - SEE - ESS - AYE (SCSI)
or "Skuzzy"
ronnythunder

scuzzy. definitely.

Tee-Why reminds me too much of Kay-Why, and the idea of a KY-tool is too gross to contemplate. :D

hey Jdiner... do you also call them Tee-Why files (.ty)... or Tie (.ty) files?

T-Y-Streams...
No I did not name those. So They might just be tie-streams. But I reserve the right to say the other however I want. :)

Just my opinion but I pronounce it like a three letter acronym (which are frequently spelled out, PNNI/OSPF/etc...). Interestingly, if the TY were _before_ the period I'd probably pronounce it tie dot tee-why. But I'm a little off sometimes. :)
usr == you-ess-are and user.
scsi = scuzzy, but sometimes I like to use sexy (hey, it fits). :-)
I'm reasonably sure the .gif is supposed to be pronounced like the peanut butter. At least according to Compuserve the progenitor of the format.
Ok, now here's my big questions:
1) Why does bin = ben? "bin" is a real word so I'm confused.
2) SysOp = SY-SOP? It's short for System Operator so ... ?
Just honestly curious.

Shorter is better (er, at least in this case...)
Tee-Why-Tool is 3 syllables, TieTool is 2, but I am in such awe of jdiner that I just refer to it as awe-some :D
Thanks for the tool, dude...as for voting, I'll take #2.

Sysop.. BBS.. Man, those were the days. Making your daily rounds to local computers to catch up on the latest, get news, swap files and ideas. A nice little virtual community in your neighborhood. Heh, that's where I met my wife, back in '95. :)
But anyway, I've heard people call it Sy-Sop too. Maybe it was spelled that way somewhere and people picked up on it, who knows.

OK.. This is getting slightly pedantic, but:
As I said, GIF is a hard G (like gift) because it stands for Graphic Interchange Format, not Giraffic Interchange Format.
Bin is pronounced BIN, but that kinda bothers me because it *IS* short for b*I*nary...
and there is NO doubt that a SYS OP is NOT SY SOP because system is sistum, not sie stum.
How's that!?!?
