Last month, I saw a notice of a new DVD player that has built-in timeshifting and PVR capability. I don't know if anyone has started hacking that player yet.

Not only is the price too high, but I had a RCA that would only play in that type of DVD recorder. I have an Apex that will play a DVD burned on to a pancake and it wouldnt play one recorded from the RCA....

Good lord, those prices! Wow.
Let's see:
- Series 1 DTivo $99
- Turbonet card $70
- Bigger HD $100 (varies)
- DVD Burner $300 (Sony +-r/rw)
- TyTool/TyStudio free
--------------------------------
Total $570
Half the price and more functional (dvd burner separate, more capable).
(of course if you factor in an hourly cost to tweaking/hacking, then it is another story)
I'll give you a finders fee for finding a functional series 1 DTivo for $99. Even the broken ones seem to go for $150.
Amazing.

($99 is what I paid for both mine 2 years ago, sorry)
I've got a fully-functional, never used Series 1 Philips DSR6000 sitting in my closet right now.
I was thinking: spare parts, cheap backup.
What is it worth?

I'll bet A good deal of that price is because of the "DCDi™ by Faroudja"... Nothing with the Faroudja name on it is inexpensive... They make very high quality video processors/scalers that range in price from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. I witnessed a home theater with a Faroudja scaler that had a pricetag of $20,000. The video it output was the sweetest thing I ever saw... of course it was also hooked up to a $30,000 9" CRT Projector
