NEWBIES WELCOME
TyTool is a program designed by Josh (jdiner), for extracting video from the Tivo, removing commercials, and either playing the extracted video on a computer, or burning directly to inexpensive CD or DVD media (http://www.allmediaoutlet.com). IT'S ALL FREE, IT'S ALL EASY, and IT'S ALL HERE! Furthermore, regular improvements are constantly being made to make it even easier and better than it already is.

FredThompson said it best when he said, "it's a good milestone when comments are about automation (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2889) and GUI refinement (ftp://ftp.miabbott.com/test/GUI%20proposed%20by%20Pro-289%20on%207-4-2003.gif), not major functionality."

This thread is designed to contain everything needed for video extraction in one place. It is not a discussion thread, but simply a one-stop-shop for the files.

Below is the latest TyTool program with EVERYTHING INCLUDED. You don't have to HUNT for anything (tserver_mfs7, NowShowing.tcl, Cygwin.dll v.1005.5.0.0). It is all here. As newer and better versions of the files are found, this post will be updated to the best of my ability.

Specific contents are:
1) TYTOOL Windows side files (all that is needed by most users)
2) TYTOOL TiVo side files for both series I and series II TiVos
3) old tserver source code, UNIX and MAC versions of vsplit, UNIX based 'alpha' console version of TyTool called TyNix

DVD Templates are shown and updated here (http://www.tytool.com/TyTemplates/TyTool+Templates/default.aspx)

NEWBIE GUIDES

Everyone has been a newbie at one time or another, and perhaps been ignored or flamed in the forums for asking what someone else thought was a 'dumb' question. It can be quite overwhelming finding the information you need in here. Hopefully, you will find have come to the right place for some of it.
Inside the zip file below, is a nice quick-and-dirty, written by me, on how to get started FAST with TyTool. It is entitled "newbies START HERE easy 1-2-3".

For the 'COMPLETE’ NEWBIE (meaning you have never put a file on a Tivo or pulled one off), Here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2153) is a good 9 page word document with pics, written by just4fun.

GUIDES and Other Stuff -- for the non-newbie
If you are not completely new, but just getting started with Tivo hacking, you might like this older site which defines some of those crazy looking UNIX commands (http://www.gormly.com/users/drapatin/tutorial.html#1). The Murray's have put together guides for going both to VCD (http://themurrays.homeip.net/downloads/tivo/tivo.html), and VCD (http://themurrays.homeip.net/downloads/tivo/tivo.html) using TyTool. Those two guides are their best work but they have also shared this folder (http://themurrays.homeip.net/downloads/tivo) full of many other usefull how-to's for other types of Tivo problems. There is a wealth of information there.
TyTool’s OFFICIAL homepage, www.tytool.com (http://www.tytool.com/), owned by Josh and managed by a close companion, containing DVD labels and other neat stuff, is also on it’s way to being developed.
Josh recommends (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28475&perpage=40&pagenumber=11) these two 1 (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=2071&pcount=&Product_Id=107727) 2 (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate/index.html) power user devices for ‘fast editing’.
Here (http://www.trilight.com/dvdguides/tivo/default.htm) are some good guides on a website by Trilight if you like using TyTool with DVD Lab (http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/history.html) or Maestro.

Please let me know in a PM, if there is anything I can do or add to this post to make it easier for folks.

Note: This post was from MrBassMan. But a bug in the system wiped out the old thread when I was moving somethings. So I am putting it back as close to as it was as I can. --jdiner

This message was originally from captain_video:

Here's a trimmed-down version of snoopy's everything.zip file that just contains the Tivo-side files missing from jdiner's TyTool releases. Included are a NowShowing.tcl, tserver_mfs6, and readme file. The readme file contains the instructions for installing and setting permissions for the NowShowing.tcl and tserver_mfs6 files on your Tivo. Once these have been transferred ansd setup on your Tivo, you will only need to update your files on the PC whenever jdiner releases any newer versions of TyTool, unless of course he decides to upgrade these files as well. Currently, all of his releases have been limited to the PC side of things. If the NowShowing.tcl file I included doesn't work for you then download snoopy's everything.zip file in the above post and try one of the files included in that package. One of them should work for your Tivo OS version.

Here's the files that were missing from the deleted post. I had to recreate the zip file but I think I've got everything that was included in the deleted file. The zip file contains several different versions of NowShowing.tcl so try them all and see which one works for you. I've also included the latest tserver_mfs6 file as well as the original readme file containing the instructions for installing and setting up these files on the Tivo side.

This file is compressed with winrar (http://www.rarsoft.com/rar/wrar320.exe) to fit within the 1MB limit, and takes less than 10 seconds to download over DSL or Cable. In most cases, it should extract just fine, using whatever you normally use to extract zip files.[/B]

Motty: as stated by snoopy, its a rar archive, not a zip archive. the name is there because the board limits what extensions it will recognize. the file is not corrupt (just to be extra sure, i checked myself just now and its fine).

Due to all of Jdiner's hard work, TyTool now goes the entire gamit, from Download, all the way through to DVD.
TyTool (posted at the top), is now an easy, all-in-one solution.

For those that like experimenting with other tools, and for those that want to do more complicated things, like creating fancy menus, etc; here are links to some of the more popular DVD authoring packages. Please note that, like any software, each of these packages has it's own set of problems, and benefits.

I highly recommend using the updates as they improve and get posted. The last time I checked, they were up to 1.2.1 (beta) with DVD Lab and it fixes ALOT of stuff, so ALWAYS CHECK for the latest updates once the package is installed.

newbies ask:
"WHY ARE SMART PEOPLE SO DAMN RUDE?"
"WHY CAN'T I JUST ASK A 'simple' QUESTION?"
http://www.boomspeed.com/giantgirls/killcomputer.gif
I have kindof a stick up my but about newbies finding it difficult to find the information they need quickly. Rest assured you are in good hands here, and you all ask a fair question. However, please understand that there are basically some 'simple' steps you absolutely need to take to keep people from getting pissed off here. Believe me I am guilty of not following my own advice and have had plenty of people pissed off at me. It's how I got that stick up my but :) So listen up here so that you can make it easier on yourself by not having to go through what I have along the way. Any kind of research project is frusterating! After all, you are searching for 'relatively' new information. In my humble opinion dealdatabase forums have done a damn good job toward making this particular research project as easy as it can be for a lay audience.

HOMEWORK:
STEP 1) Realize this is a 'research project' and as such will be frusterating. It is nobody's fault that it is.
STEP 2) Take a little bit of time to learn how to do a simple "search" so that you can read what others have written without asking a question that gets answered way too much.
STEP 3) Post a question in the 'appropriate' forum.
STEP 4) Try writing a particular person who looks like they might have knowlege in a particular area. Don't expect them to answer you.
When you have been around a while, you will notice that those that have the most knowlege, also have the most demands on their time. Try writing someone else or even better, start again at STEP 1 with a better search based on what you have learned.

HERE (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=136292#post136292post136292) is a link back to this post for anyone wishing to add it to an autoresponse file of some sort.

Please accept my appologies if you are a newbie and got linked to this post by me (snoopy). However, I generally do not point to this post without giving your question a read so if you have not done the above suggestions my response could be a little harsh in trying to get you to do a little more homework on your own. Thank you for stopping by.
