View Full Version : What is the best way to do this?

I am a newbie in this whole Tivo hacking stuff. Been doing a lot of reading. I am looking to get a HDVR2. Probably the base 40GB and then add more space later. I found nipquads FTP server and his generous sharing of pre-built images (thanks nipquads!).

A few questions (note, that I don't have a unit yet :)):

1) The "w/ stream" images... are those the ones with the background animations that people say they loose when they put on the twinbrothers U5 image?

2) He has 40GB, 60GB and 80GB image. They are all roughly the same size, why is there a different image for each size? Do I have to match the HD space to the image? I would like the 80GB w/hack image. Do I need an 80GB drive or will a > 80GB work or will a < 80GB work?

3) My PC is an XP machine formatted with NTFS. My hard drive and a CD reader and a CDRW drive are both SCSI and a DVD-RW drive is IDE. Will I still be able to load the image? I recall reading somewhere that I need IDE/Fat32?

I would like to do this without buying a IDE harddrive just to keep as a place holder for images and without reformatting my NTFS harddrive.

Since I have 2 CD drives, can I burn the MFStools to one CD and the image to another CD and just work both off the CDs?

4) If I go buy a bigger IDE drive (120GB+) and REPLACE the drive that comes with the HDVR2, is it just basically load the image and run?

There aren't any 5400 RPM drives really available, will dual 7200RPM drives over heat without any extra cooling?

Thanks!

1) Yes, w/streams means you have the animations.
2) to restore the 80GB image you will need at least a 80GB HD, and sometimes you might be unlucky and get a 80GB that will come out to be "too small" (something with cylinders and stuff I don't know about... :D )
3) You need FAT32 and IDE from what I know. There are probably ways to get the tools to work with SCSI and so forth, but a more experienced user will have to confirm and help you out in that regard.
4) You will have to load properly then do a "Clear and Delete" to be able to start recording.

Don't know about temperature issues with 5400 vs 7200.. sorry

Hope that helps a little bit

Thanks for the response.

Do I need to do anything special if I want to restore the 80GB image to a LARGER drive? (ie 120GB+)

As I said, I don't have a unit yet, this "Clear & Delete", from a search, that is an option in the system menu of the Tivo? I only need to do this to record right? Ie, I can boot up the system to get to that menu?

grab the 40gb image or whatever, then use mfstools 2.0 (included in the iso image in the how-to sticky) to expand the image to whatever size you want below the 137gb limit per drive
