View Full Version : Ok. Time for a list of working DVD Players for Tivo DVDs...

Alright. I continue to get asked about issues with various DVD player hardware.

Some of these issues are things that can't be fixed. Limits to the DVD player itself (i.e. no support for 480x480 etc...) But some of them are obviously software creation issues. A few have mentioned that using tools like tmpgenc's DVD Author or DVD Lab has produced things that play from a source TyStream where TyTool does not. This means there is something fixable in there that I have not found as an error to date. So what I would like us all to do is make a list of the DVD Players we have and have tried things on and what we know about them in general.

This way people can come here for information and I can get the information I need to get things off and running in an attempt to get the maximum compatibility. Because right now everything I make plays on everything I have...

Now in some cases older players in the same vein work better than newer ones so if possible provide date information from the sticker on the back of the player (some have it, some do not).

Please answer the questions below directly and in order for ease of gathering results down the road. I know that some of this is available on other sites. But I would like to know which users here are having which issues and what those are. It is the only way I am going to be able to look into support for anything.

So the list of questions:
1- Brand/make/model/year?
2- Software to split/process TyStream?

3- Software to create DVD fileset?
4- DVD success or failure?
5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?

6- Software to create SVCD fileset?
7- SVCD sucess or failure?
8- Description of the SVCD failure if there was one?

9- Short comment on report.

The most flexible I have seen for NTSC Tivo DVD and SVCD playback. But it has no progressive output. So the color degredation found in certain DTV streams is very noticble during DVD playback.

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
Video plays back fine, but the 480x480 picture is squished to the left side of the frame (i.e., the player doesn't stretch the picture.)

Since I play back through a computer, it's no big deal for the computer to do the stretch instead, but it wouldn't be any good if I had the player hooked directly to a TV.

Doesn't say it supports SVCDs. But plays over spec discs greater than 2.6Mbit video bitrate (xSVCD), and @ 48KHz audio. For DVDs (either 720x480 or 480x480), plays either Dolby Digital or MPEG audio.

3- Software to create DVD fileset?
TyTool7r10

4- DVD success or failure?
Failure.

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
Didn't actually see it. But I heard it was squished on screen and shifted to the left a little, probably due to the 480 width, and the audio played a little random noise and pops every now and then. It was transcoded and burned @ #7 Dolby 48@384 and was @ 480x480 size.

6- Software to create SVCD fileset?
Nero 5.5.10.35

7- SVCD success or failure?
Failure

8- Description of the SVCD failure if there was one?
Did not like Nero SVCD menus. Also failed because the video bitrate was too high, sometimes 3-4Mbit. It plays, but skips when it gets to the high bitrate sections.

9- Short comment on report.
This player is spec-bitrate strict. I had to use TMPGEnc to re-encode the video down to spec 2520kbit max. Only then would it play smoothly on this player. I haven't tried 48kHz audio yet. The DVD menu created with TyTool worked perfectly. This DVD player is totally by-the-book, and shouldn't be purchased if possible.

9- Short comment on report.

This DVD player is stubborn...it will not play audio that is not encoded as Dolby Digital...if you are burning MPEG II audio, you won't get any sound...So, the new release of TyTool7r6 that is able to convert to DD, is the key here...

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
A 544x480 looks a wee-bit choppy. Worse, about two-thirds of the way across the screen there's a weird column about 1/10th the width of the screen. This inch-wide column looks ot be shifted up a row or two of pixels above the rest of the screen.

Playing shows on disc; some start properly but others, once you the select show, get a quick snip of audio and the clock starts but it stays on the menu, no video. If you fast forward a bit, the show comes on the screen.
I've narrowed that down to the cut point I select when editing in GOP, just have to go back and try a different cut point and rebuild the DVD. Otherwise no other errors.

In regards to the player, I've only used +R/RW media so I can't report on -R/RW compatibility. Sometimes the audio lags behind or the video moves real fast but this is only for a second or two and the player corrects itself. Love the tools and this ability we all have as a result.

9- excellent multiregion pal/ntsc progressive scan player, but frustrating to be limited to 4x ff/rw

I also have an Apex AD-600a and had the same results as others (though it was bit stuttery, replacing with another DVD-ROM helped but still a little iffy, but I don't think it's the DVD-R's fault.)

The MVD-2030 is, I believe, the same guts in a vertical package (and easy to find at Target), it does play the DTivo-ripped DVDs, but I haven't tried to FF/RW faster than 4x on it. I assume it would have the same problem.

Portland PVD-1000 (Another cheap no-name player from Target. It's supposed to be a clone of the Mintek 1600 and many others that use the Mediatek chipset.)

UPDATE 7-25-03:

Retested with the following players:

Daewoo DVG-3000N with Factory Firmware

Norcent DP-300 (a.k.a. "Norcent Gold") with
Factory firmware,
Nerd-Out "LH+UOP" firmware (downloaded from the web site),
OFFA v1.4 firmware (downloaded from Yahoo group),
and the latest "Dolphin" firmware (downloaded from Yahoo group).

Both of these players run off of the ESS chipset.

6- Software to create SVCD fileset?

I created 3 SVCD's:

(a) Burned .MPG generated by TyTool directly to a CD-R with Nero 5.5.9.17. Used Super Video CD setting.

I transcoded the TyTool-generated .MPG with TMPGEnc v2.513.53.162, Core version 1.96.149 with the Ligos MPEG-2 Encoder (from the K-Lite codec pack) as follows:

(b) Super VCD NTSC CBR per the wizard.
(c) Super VCD NTSC CQ-VBR and Motion Search Precision = High Quality custom settings.

and then burned to CD-R in the same way as (a).

7- SVCD sucess or failure?

(a) Failure
(b) Failure
(c) Failure

8- Description of the SVCD failure if there was one?

(a) Blockiness in high action / rapid change sequences. Freezing pixelation and audio dropouts in those same areas. This was only in the first 2 minutes of the program - the rest of it was perfect.
(b) Very jerky / staggered motion - looks more like a rapid slide show. Watchable but annoying.
(c) One freeze about one minute into playback, surprisingly in a segment that wasn't problematic in (a). Same disk plays OK in PC without freezing. Otherwise pretty good. Some motion jerkiness / staggering but not as bad as (b).

9- Short comment on report.

All 3 of my SVCD's had some kind of issue. I'm hoping I can find a better DVD player that can play DTiVo SVCD's without the need to transcode the TyTool-generated .MPG.

UPDATE 7-25-03:

Success!

The Daewoo played my "problematic" SVCD the best with only one minor dropout in the opening sequence. The Norcent had some additional dropouts in the same spots regardless of which firmware I had on it but overall results were very good. (WinDVD shows data rate spikes of up to 10 Mbps for this SVCD.)

Overall either the Daewoo or the Norcent is a good choice for playing SVCD's. The Norcent gets extra points for its versatility! ;-) I was very lucky to find it.

I've tried lots of programs and combination of making DVD from my SAT-T60 Tivo. Here what works every time:

1. Tytool to MPG file.
2. Patch headers to 3.5MBit/s and 352x480
3. Build DVD folders in Ulead (Project settings to 352x480 and don't convert compliant files)
4. Patch only the VTS_01_X VOBs back to 15MBit/s and 480x480
5. Burn on latest Nero as ISO/UDF (don't forget the force compatibility flag)
6. Pop in DVD with some popcorn and smile :)

One little note. One my home DVD player the audio is in perfect sync. However, on the one in my car, the audio is a little behind.

Didn't do SVCD. CD-R not compatible, CD-RW works with other SVCDs I've tried. Just FYI for anyone that might be wanting to use this player for VCD.

9- Short comment on report.

Great tool, works perfectly with my player and my PC. Burned with Nero on a Pioneer A-103 w/Verbatim DVD-R and Memorex DVD-RW. Both work fine in this player with menus. I'll be testing 7r7 or newer for the next DVD burn.

9- Short comment on report.

I basically followed ctsshack's method with a few changes.

1. TyTool to extract
2. TyStudio to convert to MPG
3. Mpeg2vcr to split into parts (between commercials) (I tried cutting the commercials out, and saving as one mpg, thus eliminating step 4, but mpeg2vcr would always crash. But cutting into part worked...)
4. Join them with tmpgenc
5. Patch headers to 3.5MBit/s and 352x480
6. Build DVD folders in Ulead (Project settings to 352x480 and don't convert compliant files)
7. I had to repatch the VTS_01_X VOBs back to 15MBit/s and 544x480. 480x480, and 352x480, resulted in scrambled video for about 5 seconds or so...then mysteriously corrected itself. Repatching to 544 fixed this.
8. I burned on Nero6 as ISO/UDF but didnt find a force compatibility flag.

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
Success(limited): TyStream as per Snoopy’s ( I think) instructions TyStream to extract, multiplex, up sample audio in one quick and easy step. Into WinProducer3 for frame accurate cuts deleting commercial and then re-encoding (the program does not allow many things that DVD-Lab does). Using this method I can create DVD’s that play every time, but there is some artifacting that is not present in the original .ty or in the TyToools generated .mpg and the DVD’s are only 2 hours (shows) each.

Failure: as per Snoopy’s ( I think) instructions TyStream to extract, multiplex, up sample audio in one quick and easy step. Import into DVD-Lab for menus. Burn. NOTE: THIS IS A PIONEER DV-727 PROBLEM. The video only shows on 2/3 of the screen. It plays perfectly on my father-in-laws Apex and my uncles DVD player L AHHHHHHHHH! 5 or 6 one hours shows on one DVD.

Failure: Tystream --> DVD Author same as above.

6- Software to create SVCD fileset?
VCD easy and several others I do not remember the name of.

7- SVCD success or failure?
Failure! SVCDs will not play on this player.

8- Description of the SVCD failure if there was one?
The OSD says play, the disk spins, and in a few minute it will let you take the disk out. You can use the TMPGEnc header trick, but the video only shows up on 2/3 of the screen. NOTE: THIS IS A PIONEER DV-727 PROBLEM

9- Short comment on report.
If you want a DVD player that will play DVD’s from a DTivo This Ain’t It. I have tried many different methods to make this player play an .mpg stream from Tivo with out re-encoding. I can not seem to coax, threaten or force it to.

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
The DV-05 plays the dvd, but doesn't like 480x480 and puts it in the left hand 2/3 of the screen. Video doesn't play smoothly and audio sync is off.

Success using Audio Mode 7

5- Description of the DVD failure:

IF the audio mode IS NOT SET TO Mode 7
Plays too fast, I'm estimating 2x playback, Audio is fast but fine picture jumps, maybe it's skipping frames, rather than playing at 2x but the disk plays fine in PowerDVD on the PC

9- Comment

Tried before without the audio set to mode 7.

From UK SA Tivo.
Using DVD+RW plays too fast,
Using DVD-RW won't play at all, the thing hangs on the menu section.

The machine will read +RW and -RW for backups of games so it's a menu on -RW issue not the xbox not being able to read the disc issue
Both +r and -r work fine once in mode 7

2- Software to split/process TyStream?

4- DVD success or failure?
Success with some exceptions (see below); have burned well over 500 DVDs to date, both DVD-R and -RW discs.

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
Dolby Digital soundtracks way out of sync on long movies (i.e. 2-1/2 to 3 hours in length) when authored in SpruceUp. Latest TyTools works great with no synch problems. TyStudio edits were always out of synch with 1st version of program.

Audio must be transcoded to 44.1KHz when multiplexed in TYtool.

The mpg after saving again in MPegVCR must be re-multiplexed in TMPGEnc in order to fool the Panasonic RP91 into playing svcd. Go to file=>tools=>simple multiplex=>choose mpg=>change dropdown to VCD (standard is fine)=>multiplex. Burn as VCD in Nero, ignore incompatibility warning.

This is the first Toshiba unit I've heard of a success on - I assumed I'd be SOL but was very pleasantly surprised.

I extracted the .ty, then exported from TyStudio as DVD MPG2 with 4800k audio. Then used TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5 (great program!) to create the fileset and burned to a DVD-RW. First time it had no audio, so I changed from MPG1 layer 2 audio to PCM, then it worked great.

I'm stoked

Just tried same disk on a friends Sony and that works fine too, but it looks like Sonys in general are good.

Sony (I don't remember the model, but it's 5 years old)

2- Software to split/process TyStream?
Tytool (in both mpg and .ty extraction)

3- Software to create DVD fileset?
Ulead from mpg
tytool to dvd set via .ty extraction, then copied dvd set using Ulead
tytool to dvdset, then Nero

4- DVD success or failure?
Ulead from mpg: Failure - interlacing issue (instead of A:B, I was getting B:A. this made the frame go forward and then back about 1/4 step

tytool to dvd set, then copied dvd set using Ulead: Almost a success; it seemed to work until I got to the final 2 minutes of the show. Then another interlacing type issue came in (it's like I lost part of my signal). I'm not sure what happened there. I think this method has the most promise though

tytool to dvdset, then Nero
I believe it will work on other DVD players, just not mine... I get the 2/3 wrap around issue to the other part of the screen. I'm going to test it out and I'll report back

I have managed to Burn some Video to disc after using the TyTools method. This all went without a hitch, the menu creation went fine. But when I play the DVD in my Toshiba SD1100E DVD player I get half a picture and its like its playing in fast forward (squeeky voices). I can play it on my laptop through windvd perfectly.

My questions is this: Will the DVD player be the problem? Or is there something else I can try to get it working through the DVD Player. I have tried 3 types of media.... Anything else I can try? Or do I buy a new DVD Player?

This seems to be an issue with the Pioneer players based on other posts in this thread. Some have reported that this happens only during FF/RW (but returns to normal a normal aspect when played at 1x), but on this player it's always squished to the left.

Very disapointing as this player handles just about anything else you throw at it (typical of Pioneer, quite versatile decks regarding media & formats)... I guess except for 480x480 on a DVD!

9- Short comment on report.
After some frustration, I did some looking, and it appears that this model may not support DVD+R..(except, well see two paragraphs down). A search http://www.dvdrhelp.com shows that it probably supports DVD-R/RW, but most people haven't successfully gotten it to play DVD+R/RW.

Does anyone else have this DVD player? A search on this forum yielded nothing. I LOVE this DVD player...but if it doesn't support DVD+R/RW video, it's going to have to go. It has everything I want, prog scan, optical audio, Dolby, component, etc. It has taken everything I have fed it until the DVD+R Video.

The weird think is, I burned a DVD+R full of MP3s, which were in folders on the DVD, by artist, and when I popped it in, this player pulled up a screen with the list of folders that I could browse, play songs from a specific folder, shuffle the who mess, etc. That is a kick butt feature...I don't think that most DVD players will handle an MP3 disc. That worked, but for some reason, it wouldn't read the same type of media, same brand, but different data format....

Would burning in "data" mode instead on "DVD-Video" maybe help? Would that cause problems on other DVD players then? Oops...I am straying way off topic.

Bryan

EDIT:

Just found this thread from daveinfla about buring using UDF format. I'll try it and edit with my results for the RP-62

I also wanted its more modern features, like JPEG/MPEG playback and long filenames for MP3s. (Those features work pretty well -- not perfectly -- but I guess that's a discussion for another board.)

The Cyberhome did resolve those halting problems, but introduced a new problem of its own, as noted above. I seem to have less trouble with Tivo DVDs than with SVCDs, but I have very few Tivo SVCDs to test with. All my Tivo DVDs are 480x480, and burned on DVD+R.

The aspect ratio on playback of my PAL SVCDs is much better here than on the Apex. Unfortunately, there's a worse problem instead: the sound is out of sync. I'm not sure if this is actually a PAL problem, or if it's just a coincidence; needs more testing.

This player can reportedly be made region-free from the menus. I haven't tried that yet.

All in all, I haven't entirely decided whether to keep it, though it seems too cute to return. :-)

1- Brand/make/model/year?

Toshiba SD-H400 (a late-year 2003 model combination Series 2 SA Tivo & DVD unit)

2- Software to split/process TyStream?

all versions of Tytool, going back to the oldest.

3- Software to create DVD fileset?

Mostly DvdMaestro (98%). Also a few produced only with Tytool 8r3 (they worked)

4- DVD success or failure?

About 95% worked. I haven't been able to test comprehensively yet but a few older discs would not boot. I tested about 30. Only two older ones failed. But it could be poor media compatibility too (cheap DvdPro DVD-R discs).

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?

When it worked, it worked completely with good playback quality, no stuttering. When it failed, it wouldn't even load the title screen with the movie selection menu. I suspect my cheap media is at fault, not the extraction software.

1- Brand/make/model/year?
Toshiba SD-K730 Its a 2003 from costco, about $80

2- Software to split/process TyStream?
Tytool 8r3 for everything.

3- Software to create DVD fileset?
Tytool 8r3

4- DVD success or failure?
Partial Success (dolby digital audio in dvd makes dvd freeze up alot)

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?
When done with no transcoding of audio it played video perfectly but
no sound. I assume its because mpeg 1 layer II audio is out of spec for ntsc dvd's

When done to dolby digital 348 it has video and sound but it only plays about 3 seconds and then locks up. If you skip to another chapter it will play another 3 or 4 seconds and lock up.

When done to DVD 48k @ 192 same problem as the first, I still think its the layer II audio thats the problem.

I would like to try transcoding the audio to LPCM and then mux it to a vob from that. I was hoping there was an option on vsplit or tytool to do that. If I take the time to transcode and mux myself I'll report back.

Update: Turns out I set the the dvd player to send on the raw audio bitstream to my stereo receiver which only understands dolby digital and PCM. When I set the dvd player to do the decoding I got the sound back. So now I have partial success, I will report back if I get the dolby digital sound to work.

6- Software to create SVCD fileset?
The player doesn't play SVCD end of story.

9- Short comment on report.

Basically I hate this player but my wife picked it so what can I say. I'm keeping it around for that reason but I'm reading over this forum carefully to see a good on to replace it with. I am also looking at the cheapest player at costco because I have friends that say it will play nearly anything you throw at it, can't remember the model number though. I'll get back to you guys.

Update: Well I got the mpeg layer II audio to play but the dvd with dolby digital audio is still messed up. I don't recommend this player for playing tivo dvd's but it does work.

Tytool same version

4- DVD success or failure?

Success except on the JVC player for menus -look below.

5- Description of the DVD failure if there was one?

Menus created by Tytools had an odd problem on only the JVC player. When something is selected, it -should- appear in red text instead of white. On the JVC, this doesn't happen - everything remains in white, so you don't know what selection you've made until you hit enter on the remote. Perhaps the menus don't comply to all standards?

Audiovox D1705 (Portable DVD Player):
- Success +R & +RW. Did not try -R
- TyTool: Make/Edit Key File, VOB/Mux
- DVD-Lab: import VOB files (use directly w/o demultiplexing). Create menus, etc if you want, or link as "first show" **

Initial 5.8" DVD5820(Portable DVD Player):
- FAILURE w/ +R & +RW. Did not try -R. Would not read discs at all.
- TyTool: Make/Edit Key File, VOB/Mux
- DVD-Lab: import VOB files (use directly w/o demultiplexing). Create menus, etc if you want, or link as "first show" ** / ***

Mintek 2110 (aka $39 p.o.s. *)
- Success w/ +R, +RW, -R. [I know that it plays -RWs too]
- TyTool: Make/Edit Key File, VOB/Mux
- DVD-Lab: import VOB files (use directly w/o demultiplexing). Create menus, etc if you want, or link as "first show" **

* This thing is amazing. I bought it last year for like $39 and it has NEVER refused to play a disc...ever. It plays VCDs, SVCDs, 480x480 DVDs, etc etc.

** When I'm lazy I have DVD-Lab burn the DVD for me, although I feel that Nero does a better job. Sometimes I have minor issues when using +RWs when burning w/ DVD-Lab... but I have those when using non-TiVo source material too. This is anecdotal at best! It could all be random errors.

*** Something else I noticed on these machines... althought I think it is a function of the DVD Authoring software, perhaps(?). When I used the fast-forward feature it would work @ 2x, 4x, 8x, 16 etc. But, when I would hit play to get back to watching it, it would crash. Again, DVD plays normally, but when you FF thru it, it bombed out. I did not have any chapters defined so I can't tell you about that.

UPDATE I tried using the FF on my Mintek at home and it did in fact crash out to the Title Menu anytime I would use the FF feature. I then authored the DVD w/in TyTools and it works just fine, so this is a function of the authoring program, not the burning software.

UPDATE AGAIN I purchased an Audiovox D1705... it is pretty damn compatible w/ everything I've thrown at it. It plays +R, +RW, -R & -RW. It plays DVDs authored w/ DVD-Lab, DVDauthor (via TyTool), DVDShrink & DVD2One (burned w/ Nero). It also supports raw .mpg files just burned to a CD. I even took one of my VOB flies made in TyTool that was under 700MB, burned it to a CD and it played just fine... no issues at all.

UPDATE 01/26/04 I finally found something that the Audiovox D1705 will not play. A DVD w/ mixed 480x480 content and 720x480 content. I got a bit "choppy" when trying to play it. Not that this is going to happen anymore, I changed my TiVo resolution to 720x480, but I still have some 480x480 sitting on my drive.

Nothing to do w/ TiVo, but this DVD player also supports MP3s that are burned to a DVD... many out there will support CD based MP3, but not DVD. However, it does not have "long filename" support, but the music plays.

EDIT: DVD burner is Sony DRU500A running Firmware 2.0g.

I've heard that this player can play many different format discs on both cd and dvd. I've even heard that it can play raw mpeg files right off of dvd or cd. I will be testing this and report back, it just came in the mail so I threw one of my already done dvd's in and tried it out.

SVCD output was great, as good as dvd (makes sense since its the same video stream) FF, RW both worked fine. I was happy that menus worked also.

Tried a cd I had an mpeg 1 or 2 (can't remember) file burned to as just a raw file and it worked. FF did not work in the raw file but it could be a really poor mpeg. Still kind of amazing.

Has some trouble with commercial dvd's (maybe with dtivo/tytool ones too but I haven't played many of them) where it will hang for a second then skip about 3 or 4 seconds of video. Seems like it happens about when you switch from one vob to another on the dvd but I can't verify that. Sort of annoying.

The AMW V101 was really cheap (I bought it from Circuit City for $35 about a year ago) and while it is really slow, it plays back the DVDs I've thrown at it so far.

The PS2 may have had a problem because I did not transcode my audio. I'll have to try that next.

Menus, video, chapters, etc. work fine on all 3 players.

Failure on audio. There are pops and noise in the soundtrack at some points. I read a post about it being a possible flaw with Nero. There is an update for it but the update would not install on my system :-(

Audio problems could also be due to the fact that I didn't create IFO in TyTool. Maybe the placeholders TyTool leaves in the VOB are to blame? I guess I should just follow directions next time.

9- Short comment on report.
My Sony supports DVD-R but not +R. I set the video quality to long play and it comes out looking GREAT on my TV, even on my 21" monitor. The audio was good when it wasn't popping. BTW, menu creation in Nero is really easy, looks good and is fully functional.

I burned using Nero 6 Ultra Burning ROM like the Tytool - DVD and Menu.doc file in TyTool9r14 suggests. Video and audio quality is great. I have to say I'd like to be able to use the Nero toolkit to build the menus, but that's no big deal. Works on XBox, too.

When I am playing non-film content on my DVP-NS725P, i.e. TV Shows or hybrid content (interlaced + film), the video on the screen will flicker between most quick scene changes. I noticed it alot on "The Shield - Seasons 1 and 2" and on DVDs burned from Tivo content.

I know its not a bad player because I have 2 of these each bought at different times and they both have this exact same problem. I have a feeling that it has a hard time with interlaced content, since all hollywood movies (film, 24fps) plays just perfect.

I could not find any settings on the player to help alleviate the problem. I am using the S-Video output. I have since switched to the new Philips 642 and this DVD player plays everything great, even divx discs.

[UPDATE: I believe this was just the progressive setting. Sony did not put this setting in the menus thus I never found it, but it is a button on the front of the player that lets you toggle from progressive, interlace, detect. Switching this solved the flicker problem. However, I still love my Philips since it also plays divx and +R].

In my experience the PS2 will play anything that I extract and burn from my DTivo with Tytools and Nero. No problems with the 480x480 Tivo standard. However I still get the left squished screen on my Toshiba 3109 and Pioneer DV-525. These are DVDs only.

Did you use the Old or New muxer? Try with the new muxer if you haven't already as it was made with buffer management in mind (poor buffer management is probably what is causing your freezes and skips).

Good idea Malfunct. I tried it, but the result is much the same.

I did a bit closer examination of what is going wrong in cast that helps:

The picture and sound freeze about every 4 seconds. It looks more like a pause than a jump - if you took the gap out you would the right thing. Between the gaps pictures and sounds seem to play at the right speed.

Its very odd. Any other ideas?

HDMI and component video outputs; compatible with MP3s, Divx, WMA, and just about anything else I can think of; forward and reverse scan capability at multiple speeds like a normal DVD (my Sony 715P would only scan tyDVDs at one speed); ultra-slim profile (about 1.5" high).

I havent read through this entire thread so excuse me if this was already addressed.

I had an issue where the DVD's I was making with the Tivo utils werent playing in the kids PS2. I took the DVD I created and used DVD Shrink on it and created a new DVD and that works on the kids computer.

You can Google DVD Shrink to get the web site with the free download.

HDMI and component video outputs; this is a "universal" player in that it is supposed to play back all disc formats including SACD and DVD-Audio discs (I haven't had a chance to test these capabilities yet as I currently do not own any such discs). This is a high-end player ($2100.00 list; I paid about $1650) and probably not for the average person unless you are an avid home theater enthusiast. I've also tried my TyDVDs on some of the high-end Pioneers (47ai) and Integra/Onkyo players (I forget the model Nos.) and they appeared to work fine. The video output of the 9500 has to be seen to be truly appreciated. It's as close to Hi-Def as you will see from a DVD, it really is that good. I use it in conjunction with a Hitachi 60VS810 60" LCD HD RPTV. I've gotten to the point where I won't feed it anything but honest to goodness topnotch DVDs, which is why I just joined NetFlix. With the 3-at-once plan I get about six DVDs per week that I rip to my hard drive and copy to DVD-RW discs for viewing at my leisure. The TyDVDs in my archive never looked as good on my old Mitsubishi RPTV and Sony 715 player.

On this model I think you need to set the Audio Transcoding to #7 to make it work. Before I did that, the only way I got audio was from the DVD player's multichannel analog outputs - I got nothing out of my Dolby Digital outputs. After switching to #7 - Presto!

You might try changing your digital outputs to convert to PCM instead of sending the raw bitstream. What happens is the dvd player pushes out the raw audio stream, which is mpeg layer 2 audio for most tytool created dvd's unless you transcode to dolby digital, and your stereo reciever doesn't know how to decode it. This would save you the time it takes to transcode the audio to dolby digital and would let you fit a small bit more video on each dvd as I think the audio stream would be more compact.

Is that a +RW or -RW disc? It could be the type of disc you're using (- vs. +), the format of the disc (R vs. RW), the player's ability to play 480x480 resolution discs, the player's ability to play mpeg layer 2 audio, the brand of media you're using, etc. I would suggest you take a sample recording on DVD and go to your nearest CC or BB and try it out on various players to see what works and what doesn't. A lot of players will play -R/RW discs but not +R/RW discs and vice versa.

kaloveah

1. I thought I had posted - I did not know that you would receive a personal email.

2. If the DVD said something about R- or R+, I would have stated that. There is no way, looking at the disc, to determine this. I was looking for advice that went beyond the obvious, something that maybe I hadn't thought of.

Thanks.

To figure out what kind of media, you can try something like DVD Identifier (http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/) with your PC.

I've had a lot of success with finicky players with a drive that finishes the "BookType" on DVD+R media as DVD-ROM.

captain_video
01-29-2007, 09:33 PM
I recently discovered that Nero will automatically set the disc type for DVD+R discs to DVD-ROM by default. This will fool a player into believing it's playing a DVD-R disc since they're also DVD-ROM discs.

The discs work great. I have not tried to pretty up the menus at all or done anything fancy. I left the audio alone ( no transcoding ) and the player reports the audio as MPEG2 2 channel. I have burned two dvds and no coasters. I am newbie to all this but have pretty good linux skills so I seem to have been able to pick up this easier than some.

I used Imation DVD+R discs I bought in a stack of 50 pretty cheap. I can't think of anything else that might be relevant. For a cheap Best buy player I have been happy with this unit.
