Could Tivo Series 2 hacking be done without modifying the PROM?
Does the PROM check the checksum of the Linux kernel alone,
or does it check all the programs? If it only checks the kernel and
the kernel checks the other programs then modifying the kernel
to avoid the other checks and giving it the right checksum would do it. Is a strong cryptographic message digest used for the
checksum? Could one modified kernel be produced then a colaborative, brute force, effort to find an adjustment to the file to make the checksum come out to the right value?
(Alternatively, did I miss some thread here that came up with a means of software only update of the PROM in a standalone Tivo brand series 2? People talk so much about different versions
(HDVR2 and SA and things like that, and chips like 37 and 39 that I never know which configuration which technique applies to.)
