View Full Version : Is it just me or is the HDVR2 slow as hell?

Just like the subject says, the HDVR2 guide seems slow as hell. If I hold down the button, the page doesn't even draw anymore after a few seconds. My Sony A55 keeps up just fine (its not a DTivo though). Is this an issue on all DTivos or just the HDVR2? Is there a better one?

bottom line, dtivos are slower than regular receivers. one big reason for this is the need for dtivos to cache the video by about 2 seconds before it is displayed. if you are into channel flipping, you will quikly learn to use the guide more efficently, or learn to hate tivos.
of course, most of us dont watch live tv once our tivo is set up. but thats not the developers...we dont even watch tv since we spend too much time messing with the tivo

Hmmm... that sucks... I do kind of flip channels. Even on my Sony A55, the on screen guide is unusable outside of the current 2 hr window. I get those annoying as hell "Please wait, aquiring guide from satellite" messages.
Ive taken to looking at the guide on DTVs web site.
That said, a friend at work told me that his Sony SAT-T60 is much faster then the HDVR2.
If you could pick the T60 or the HDVR2, which would you pick? Not sure if I have much choice as the T60 is discontinued and hard to find. The "hackability" of Series 1 vs Series 2 is not really an issue.

there is no definitive proof that one is faster than the other. if you want to flip channels, then you really arent a tivo person (not trying to be rude), because the whole point of tivo is to keep you from flipping and letting you use that time to watch what you want. its just a cost of doing business, but most are more than happy to trade channel flipping for tv their way(tm)
dont get a t60 or other series1 thinking it will be lots faster, you will be dissappointed. the only real source of dtivo s1 units is ebay. you can find them elsewhere, but its definitely more rare

Good point. This'll be my first Tivo, so I guess I just haven't been "Tivo'ed" yet. My intension was to use the dual tuner functionality mainly and for recording purposes. I guess the HDVR2 does have the USB for faster transfers, but I don't think I'll be doing video extraction... the picture on DTV is not really "DVD worthy" anymore and I refuse to watch TV on my PC. Thats just sick :).
Any word on HD-DTivos? I know they are supposed to be coming out in December, but any info on them? I've only heard about the RCA DTC-200 or some derivative of it.
Here is hoping RCA keeps a similar shape to the DTC-100. That was a really nice looking box.

Actually, I find it's not that bad if you used the channel up and down key to navigate through the guide instead of using the arrow key to move one row at a time. The channel up/down does it by page. It speeds thing up a hold lot comparing to using the arrow. Because it doesn't require to validate/redraw the screen as much.
