View Full Version : Extract from S2SA TiVo disk in PC?

Is it possible to extract video directly from the TiVo disks if I mount them in my PC? I have an AT&TiVo (SAS2) with 2 drives and want to grab a few shows off of it. I have a recent PC with Linux installed and running. I want to pull the drives from the TiVo, mount them in the PC, and grab the streams off of them. Then I guess I could demux them, fix them up, and write some nice SVCDs.

Is this possible? It seems that all the discussion is about getting BASH and thus copying video over the network. But this isn't really necessary if you won't be extracting frequently. I've had my TiVo for over a year and have saved just a few things that I want to keep for posterity.

I guess the SAS2s don't encrypt the streams, right?
But I gather that it's tough to know what to grab from the disk of a non-running TiVo. Right again?
I assume folks have done this, way back when, with S1s, before the network stuff was available.

Thanks!

It may be possible but it is actually easier to extract from a running box.

Why? Because TiVo's software helps us locate and extract streams. We are afforded real-time access to their database, using their own mfs libraries. The majority of this stuff has never been ported to the PC.

SAS2s at 4.0 do scramble the streams.
