I'm a newbie at this. When I "Make a key file", I get the following error: Sorry... Failed to get the first 10 initial chunks... Have to have at least that many to start the analysis phase... I looked around these forums and read stuff about encryption. Is that the problem I am having? I am running Tivo client alpha 7 rel 4. Can anyone help me??

You need to make sure you have noscramble running on your DTivo BEFORE you record any shows or they will not be extractable. You may be able to extract the ty files but you won't be able to do anything with them if they were recorded with scrambling turned on.

OK, I lost my original reply, you may see this twice.
I was afraid someone would say this. (Sigh) I've got a Tivo with 180 gb storage that I've been hanging on to for as long as a year or more. Now that I got my NIC, I wanted to dump this stuff off to SVCD/DVD. Oh well.
Thanks for the reply, Captain. A few related questions:
If I extract the files, (Scrambled as they are) is there a way to then copy them back up to Tivo, if I wipe out all of the shows?
Is there anyway I can --at least-- back up all the shows through the NIC?
Thanks again. . .
Also, can you tell me the best link for where to find info on the noscramble you describe above?

I found the noscramble stuff elsewhere in here and will have to set up for that, but I still want to copy off/on the shows to store on data DVD's or CD/s and then retrieve them at some future date if so desired. (That or back up the entire drive via my NIC)

Yes, but whether or not the TiVo will use the same keys to unscramble them the second time around may be something you have to figure out on your own.
Search for mfs_ftp and start experimenting...

You may be able to do it by extracting the shows in tmf format using mfs_ftp. The jury's still out on whether you can do it with scrambled shows. I don't know anything about the keys that David Bought is referring to but I suppose he may have a point. AFAIK, the only option you have for backing up scrambled shows is to do a disc-to-disc copy of the Tivo hard drive to another hard drive. Backing up via NIC is only a possibility if you can get mfs_ftp working with scrambled shows. The only way to know for sure is to install mfs_ftp and extract a show in tmf format and then see if you can upload it back to the DTivo and watch it.

Nah. They'll just post the same question without doing a search first. Redundancy is what we live for.
