My copy of Nero 6 Ultra arrived from Microwarehouse today, and I've started playing around with it. I have a couple of the Cirque du Soleil performances on my Tivo, so I used Tystudio to grab them and convert them to mpg. Once that was done, I brought them into Nero and burned a dvd to a folder (didn't want to waste real dvds).
There was one hitch. When processing in Tystudio, I had to set the audio to AC3. With all other settings the sound in Nero was as though someone were trying to play a phonograph record while bouncing on a trampoline. It wrote it that way to disk, too.
I'm sure I'm missing something big or obvious here, but it seemed just too easy. I'm not a pro at this, so I'm sure I am missing something. I didn't have to use DVDPatcher on the Tystudioed mpg.
I can't tell you how the authoring part works yet; that's the next adventure. And I can't tell you much about how the audio synchs with the video because in Cirque performances you can't really tell if the audio is out of synch.

Okay, I've spent more time with Nero 6 and have found a few problems.
#1. When audio is tystudioed at 48000, the audio in Nero is choppy. When audio is tyed at AC3, the audio is fine in Nero. BUT, when you try to do any cutting, the program freezes with no error and is reported by XP as not responding.
So I tried splitting rather than cutting. You know, split before the commercial then split after it and throw the commercial away. Well, as soon as I remove ANY of the split pieces I lose ALL of the audio.
#2. I've had a lot of freezes on two different machines, and I can't use it to capture from my ATI 8500 DV because there is no audio heard during the capture process. I don't know if that continues all the way through...I didn't go beyond the initial capture.
But as I said earlier, I'm not an expert at this stuff.
Fortunately, we purchased this version of Nero to burn data stuff...and the DVD authoring stuff was something we don't need. But it was worth playing with.

Just in case anyone cares besides me, The Nero folks emailed me this morning telling me I will be able to download stuff tomorrow to update the version of Nero 6 I received from a major retailer before the official release date. Ahead Software originally planned to release the software on the 18th, but at the last minute delayed that until Thursday (7/25). They also said the major retailers will be able to sell it Aug. 18. Which is strange, because my sales goddess at Microwarehouse tells me they have 5000 copies in stock to sell today (the 5000 copies are at Ingram...the virtual warehouse for a lot of major retailers).
I think the Nero folks realized how buggy the stuff was and decided to fix some stuff. I guess that's admirable...they could have dumped a POS on the public and then released daily patches. But it's still strange that it was available before the official release date.
I'm looking forward to downloading the fix and seeing how it works with Tivo files.

Nero 6 has been available for download on aheads website (http://www.ahead.de) since the 18th.

That's strange. I wonder if there was a difference between the nero.com site and the ahead.com.de site. On the nero.com site, there has not yet been a download of Nero6 (there is no download like toay). As a matter of fact, the site on the 18th was the same as it has been on the 17th. It stayed that way until that Saturday night, when they changed the release date. At that time, they said July 25 on nero.com and Aug. 15 through retailers, etc. Today, the site says July 25 for both.
That sounds positive, as though they are making progress.

I'm interested in hearing whether anyone has tested DVD-R or DVD+R burning with Nero 6 Ultra, with or without Xbox compatibility mode.
I'd like to dump my Nero 5.5.10.15 and try the newer Nero Ultra but that older release (or others very close to it) seems to be the one that most Tytoolers have standardized on for reliable burning of TyDVDs.
Anyone burning TyDVDs with Nero Ultra? Can we could incorporate their motion menus with our TyDVDs? Anyone compared player compatibility using the new Nero vs. our trusty old versions of Nero?
I will probably try it out myself this week but only have a few players currently to test it with so my results will be pretty limited.

I use Nero 6 Ultra to burn all of my dvd's. It seems that the core Nero Burning Rom is much the same as the 5.5 edition. Its slightly less stable but if it runs well on your machine and doesn't crash then the dvd's coming out of it are very good. I've used the Tivo dvd's burned with Nero 6 in the 3 machines available to me and they play perfectly in all of them.
I would recommend burning only with Nero Burning Rom and not using express, vision express, or any of thier other seemingly neat tools right now because in my experience they are very unstable and will crash your computer, probably leaving you with a ruined dvd blank. I'm hoping the new updates they released recently (around christmas time) will improve that situation but I didn't get a chance to download and try them yet.

Okay, I'll try Ultra. Thanks much for your report on it. I'm switching to G04 Ritek media in two days and will also switch to Nero 6 Ultra. And I'll do some compatibility testing on playing via Xbox and a Sony player.
Nero 5.5.x.x is very comforting to use. But just like using old versions of Tytool instead of upgrading because they're so bulletproof and dependable, it's better to move on to more current software and test it.

On the Xbox you won't have any problems in regards to Nero 6. I just used the defaults and it worked.
