View Full Version : IRPACK_SONY12 kernel error...Tivo stop responding

Recently, my HDVR2 will occasionally stop responding to button presses both on the front panel and the remote, but TV still works (either live or playback, depending on what was on at the time). When this happens, the kernel log (/var/log/kernel) says:

Jul 18 23:10:16 (none) kernel: IRPACK_SONY12 disabled message happened 100 times

The only thing that will fix it after that is a reboot. I can still telnet and ftp in. The frequency is about every other day.

Any idea what is causing this? I'd at least like to be able to run a script to repair the error without rebooting. I've been searching, and haven't seen any references to a IRPACK_* error anywhere.

Thanks,

Did anyone ever figure this one out? I have the same thing happening on an HD Tivo 10-250. Becomes unresponsive for 30 seconds or so, then works normally for a while, /var/log/kernel is full of...

The IR thing turned out to be some wierd IR interference issue.

I have an infrared repeater with it's little emitter sitting in front of the TiVo. The Tivo is in a cabinet. The problems started when I closed the cabinet door. But, if I opened the door and issued a few remote commands, it would clear up.

I think the emitter signal reflecting back off the door was confusing it somehow. I finally used a piece of black tape to tape the emitter directly on the TiVo's IR receiver (blocking any reflections that may come from outside sources) and the problem seems to have completely cleared up.

I wondered about this as I also have an IR repeater in front of my tivo as my slinke controls all my equipment through IR.

I just noticed that the PWR light flashes red/orange when it is receiving I/R signals. i wonder if that flashing, reflecting back off the cabinet door was the problem. I guess a test would be to put tape over the PWR light.

But it works now so I probably won't mess with it more. If anyone else encounters this, just experiment with i/r emitter placement or look for other sources of I/R interference (as indicated by the PWR light randomly flashing red.
