there is a download on tivostuff.com for the xtreme 2.52 (DSR6000_252Xtreme.zip).... it appears to be the full OS and not an upgrade??
Ive been told to install 2.5 and then upgrade to 2.52 which supposedly includes the demo mode killer.... can I just install this 2.52 and skip installing 2.5 first??

You should install 2.5 let it run in the tivo without the satellite feeds hooked up and when you get aquiring satellite info yank it and install 2.5.2

You need to install 2.5Xtreme first (not the 2.5.2Xtreme image). Upgrade to 2.5.2 using Superzap's xupgrade program. Get the readme file from SZ's upgrade sticky thread near the top of this forum for installation instructions.

An mfsbackup image is sufficient. Download mfstool and run it on a linux box to unpack the image to the tivo drive.
Why should a simple backup image come with a CD full of bloat?

That file is a backup image of a system with 2.52 on it. BUT, if you've never touched your system, this will not work, since your PROM needs to be reflashed beforehand. Installing Xtreme does the re-flashing for you as part of its setup process. You can manually flash the PROM first and then install this backup file, but judging from your other posts, I'd say that's not the best way for you to go. (no offense)
