View Full Version : Running Out of Options

Figured I'd exhaust all of my options before posting. I'm trying to install 25xtreme on my Hughes GXB. Sytem was working for months and then started getting stuck on the "Welcome Powering Up" screen.
What I've done so far.
1) Bought a new HD. WD 120 gig 7200 rpms. Did extended and quick test on it 3 times with no errors
2) Reburned the 25xtreme CD 3 times and applied it to the HD.
3) Checked the voltage and it reads 5.32 which seems to be the right amount needed. Should it be higher for this HD? If so, how to I go about increasing the voltage?
4) Inserted my HD from my Phillips into the Hughes to verify the motherboard is okay. Everything worked fine.
5)Put the new HD in the Phillips and it made it through the acquiring sat data but then went to the dreaded SEVERE ERROR GREEN SCREEN. Rather than wait 24 hours and take a chance on screwing up my Phillips and pissing off the wife, I removed the HD and blessed it with 25xtreme again.
6) Checked all the ribbons including the power ribbon connected to the motherboard. I did notice a split in the smaller Parlex ribbon on the right side (facing the tivo). Seems like it was burned down the middle. Not even sure what this particular ribbon is for.
Read something in about the possibility of a bad modem. It mentioned you can remove the modemtest and it may work. How can I do this if I can't get past the boot up?

3) There are multiple voltages on the unit. 5.32 does not sound like it should be one of them. You should see 5V and 12V on the hard drive power cable (if not you should probably avoid attaching a working hard drive to the unit).
6) That does not happen during normal operation and may be a symptom of a very big problem. Does the ribbon cable connect to the power supply or to the front panel?

3) The red side was 5.32 while the yellow was 11.90. I'm pretty sure the voltage is okay but I'm willing to try anything now. Where do you adjust the voltage?
6) It's the ribbon connected to the power supply. It seems like it's burned down the middle (long way)

YOU NEED A NEW PARLAX RIBBON CABLE!!
this is 99% of the time the culprit with this problem. It gets finicky with a mint one but a ribbon with damage!?!?
dont waste anymore time get a ribbon ...PS i have an extra

These cables were not designed to act as fuses. Something else is probably wrong with the unit if the cable burned itself up without provocation.

After changing the hard drive, ribbons, and power supply. I found out it was the damn computer I was using to load the software. It worked in the past but it was not loading the software correctly. Not being an expert in Linuix. I just assumed some of the errors were okay since the first TIVO worked.
Next question. Since I have my PC still open, should I just put the Xupgrade on now or do I need to wait for any updates.

If you just installed 2.5Xtreme you need to put the drives back in the DTivo and let it boot to flash the EEPROM, reboot, and rebuild the database. Leave the sat feeds disconnected until after you've upgraded to 2.5.2 or you'll have to wait another hour for it to do a Clear Program Data & To Do List. Whe you get to the screen where it's trying to acquire the satellite data go ahead and perform the 2.5.2 or 3.1 upgrade. Since you've got the PC apart go ahead and do the upgrade from the xupgrade boot CD. It's much faster and less hassle than extracting the files using Winimage and then transferring via serial connection.
Afet installing the upgrade, transfer the drives back to your DTivo and let it boot and rebuild the database. Activate all your xPlusz hacks and activate your locals. Reboot and connect the sat feeds to the DTivo. The guide data will rebuild from scratch with the 2.5.2 OS and your locals should come in right away. You will still need to run guided setup and also reset all your personall settings and preferences. You will be unable to set up any season passes for about 24-48 hours since the DTivo needs more than one instance of a show listed in the guide before it will accept a season pass. Individual shows can be set up for recording as before.

but I have to ask. Should I add my lifetime sub (touch /etc/Subtest) before/after I upgrade to the 2.52 or does it matter. Just trying to get this done as quick as possible. Thanks for your help.

You don't use the touch function in 2.5.2 to get the pseudo lifetime sub. Activate the nophone option in xPlusz to use your DTivo without a phone line. You'll need to reboot after setting the option as it occurs at bootup.

Thanks for the help Captain. Lifetime sub, 106 hrs recording time and football season around the corner. Doesn't get any better.
