Ok here’s my story sad but true...
I've got a T60 (which I admit was hacked by someone else for me) that went into to powering up loop.
Long version is its been three week of reading and testing and I’ve got nothing. The compressed version is that I read for a week on what others have tried. So I was going to go through the checklist to figure out if it was the HD or Power or Motherboard.
1)I cleaned and reinserted (several times) the cable from the motherboard to power.
No go.
2)I took out the drives to make a back up. It took me several days of reading to figure out how to back up both drives.
I got the setup right and don’t ask me how, I torched the second 80gig Maxtor. I set aside the original HD’s and decided to start over.
3)Bought new WD80 gig to setup a fresh start. I download a copy of 252extreme T60.
I set up the CDROM on Hdd and the WD80 on Hdb. Do I boot from another device and decompress from the CD to the WD80?
I suppose the question is how do I get the image on to the HD?
This is obviously my first foyer into the Tivo and I am lost. I would almost rather shoot myself than the Tivo but then how would I enjoy all the love it brings.
Thanks for any help.

Read Hinsdales guide, do a search. It will explain how to use mvstools to backup and restore Tivo images.
Basically the command you are looking for is something similar to:
mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb
What exactly was happening, did you get to the "Please stand by" or the "Aquiring Satellite Information"? These things would help in figuring out what went wrong.

You don't want to use the 252Xtreme image for upgrading. You may never get the locals to come in plus it doesn't include the extra hacks and utilities that come with Superzap's xPlusz utility that's part of his upgrades. Get the 2.5Xtreme image for a SAT-T60 and install it directly from the CD-ROM. Look on page 3 of the How Tos Only sticky thread and you'll find a link for the 2.5Xtreme installation instructions.
Install Superzap's upgrade after doing a complete installation of 2.5Xtreme, meaning that you need to reinstall the drives in the DTivo and let it boot up, flash the EEPROM and reboot, and rebuild the database. Leave the sat inputs disconnected until after you've completed the upgrade. Shut it down when it attempts to acquire the satellite data. I'd recommend installing the upgrade using the xupgrade iso to create a boot CD. It's easier, faster, far less confusing, and less chance of error, especially for a newbie. It does require moving the drives back to your PC.
If you're new to DTivo hacking then I suggest you take a step back and follow the tips posted in my signature below. You really want to get a grasp on what it is you're trying to do before attempting to hack a Tivo. The best advise I can give is read until your eyes bleed then read some more.

Captain,
I have been reading quite a bit. I read Hinsdales guide. Printed it read again, then a few more times. I have been going through Hacking the Tivo. I've read enough threads to know you are one of the most experienced guys out there about tivos. I tried not to go on and on in my thread so I could get an answer but if I could try again I would like to ask another couple questions.
My T60 was occasionally going into the powering up reboot for the last three months. I would usually fix it by cleaning and replacing the white ribbon cable. About three weeks ago nothing worked. So after reading what the possible problems were I decided to back up the hard drives (40gb maxtor orginal and the 80gb maxtor expansion) and replace them with a single 80gb WD. First to see if it was that one of the drives was bad and second to reduce the heat by going to one drive. I tried to use the Mfs tools floppy but it always said the space was too small even thought I had just formatted the floppy. So I burned the Mfs tools CD. Worked fine.
Then between reading the read me for the Mfs and Hinsdale figured out the configuration. I set up the bios and all drives were recognized for their correct size. I restarted got to the bash and found out that the 80gb Maxtor was now not being recognized. I checked everything to find that on the bottom of the drive there was plastic melted on the drive and a chip with connections melted. I was pretty sure it was toast but not sure how I did it. So I tried to start from scratch by putting a T60 image on the New 80gb WD. You were saying the T60 extreme is not the way to go.
If I burn the 2.5extreme and put that in the CD and put the 80 in the secondary prime will that put an image of the T60 on the drive as well. I downloaded an copy of ice2.5t-60comp.bak. Do i need to put that on first. If so, do I need a second CD rom. One for Mfs tool and the other for the ice2.5 image.
The other thing is that I have the orginal 40GB Maxtor that works with the T60 image. I can put that on the 80Gb WD but how do I unmarry the second drive I lost. Hinsdale say it needed info on that drive to make a working copy.
Again thanks for any help.

i'm in pretty much the same boat :)
but i hacked the tivo with xtreme 2.5 almost 2 years ago. Then moved into a new place that didn't have dtv so i took the HDs out and put the T60 away.
Now my building is getting DTV. So i need to put the darn thing back together.
As stated above, i'll restore with 2.5 xtreme again. But is my end goal to get to 2.5.2? or 3.1? i'm most likley to signup to dtv w/ HU that came with the unit. doesn't 3.1 need the p4? (i guess they'd have to send me a new card *shrug*)
i've seen stuff with 3.1 and xPlusz - but i need to hunt around just for the upgrade.
can a legit dtv account work with a hacked t60? Do i still need to makefile in some dir to kick off the hack? (what was it by the way?)
heh.. is there an t60 howto hanging around? ;)
thanks:confused:

Here-> (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17658) BTW, 2.5.2 with xplusz works great.
