I have backed up my original boot299.btl file.
I am using Teraterm zmodem to transfer the new boot299.btl file from my pc to the dtivo.
The transfer process appears to be working fine, but right at the end I get the message: "Illegal Instruction" and the file is not copied to the /etccombo directory.
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to transfer a file to your tivo using teraterm zmodem and a serial cable, or via an ethernet cable?
Teraterm zmodem does not work with ethernet.
Use ftp instead.

Make sure the root partition is mounted read-write. You also may need to manually delete or rename the old file first, and then transfer the new one.

Thanks for your replys guys.
I am using a serial cable.
Here is what I did:
1. cd /etccombo
2. ls -la to check that original boot299 file was there.
3. transferred original boot299 to my pc for backup purposes using Teraterm zmodem and serial cable.
4. rm boot299 to delete original file from dtivo
5. ls -la to check file was no longer there.
6. Transfer new boot299 file from pc to dtivo using zmodem. Process starts running normally, but right at the end of the transfer process I get the "Illegal Instruction" message in the Teraterm window.
7. After several attempts I decided to transfer back to the dtivo the original boot299 file I had backed up, and it worked flawlessly.
8. chmod 777 boot299.btl file, and then rebooted the dtivo.
The dtivo works fine but I was not able to replace my boot299.btl file with the newer version.
Any ideas? Bubblelamp: How do I make sure the root partition is mounted read-write? Thanks again.

To make the drive read/write try this:
mount -o remount,rw /
to restore to read only try this:
mount -o remount,ro /

Thanks JJBliss, I will give it a shot. Do I write such instruction in the etccombo directory?

Nope, it did not work.
I still get the Illegal instruction message.
The funny thing is that when I transfer the original boot299.btl file from my pc the process works out just fine.
When I do the ls -la command in etccombo I notice that there are 2 other files:
boot199.btl
ndsboot299.btl
Do I need to remove any of such files?
Any other idea?
Thanks again.

Well if you are using zmodem over a serial connection, you might try dropping the baud rate down on the Tivo and the client and see if that works. But it really sounds like the kind of error one gets when trying to use zmodem over Ethernet.

Thanks Bubblelamp.
I already tried that but did not work.
What drives me crazy is that I can transfer the original boot299 from my pc without a problem, but when I try transferring the new file I get the error message.
Any other suggestions?

Maybe the file is corrupt.

Try using a different term program.

My guess is a corrupt file, also.

"Damn! My boot299.btl file must have gotten corrupted. Could you PM me a copy? You know, the one with the check bypass mod? Thanks, I really appreciate it."
Could that be next in the sequence of messages? If so, I say send it on. He deserves it for the creativity.
I'm thinking of starting a new thread, along the same lines, starting with: "I'm having trouble getting my hoiy grail to work right. It looks fine in the kitchen but when I move it to the dining room it dribbles water all over me. What could be wrong with it?" And see where we go from there.

HA HA!!! You are hillarious Will... NOT!!!
If you look at my posts I never even suggested that. I know that this file is a very sensitive issue here so I would never ask for it. Besides, there is no need to beg as the file is publically available on the net if you know how to search.
Anyways, it turns out that for some reason Teraterm was the problem. I reinstalled and am up and running now.
Thanks to all of you who offered constructive advice.
Will: Since you offer no technical help around here at least try to think of something funny to post next time :p
Regards

I'm disappointed. I thought it faintly possible you were constructing a really creative con, and I was rooting for you.
My dsr6000 hangs at "almost there, few more seconds please" screen with the moded boot299.btl. I was able to bash to tivo though.
When I swap the original boot299.btl back in it boots fine.
Anyone who hasn't done the eeprom lock having this problem?

Your modified file is hosed, it has nothing to do with the eeprom.
Can you elaborate on hosed? I did try to reload that modded boot299.btl file back but still same problem. So its not file corrumption, could it be that Tivo is checking these files and preventing it from booting if it sees this modded file?
Thanks,

Thanks,
If your Tivo is stock, and has never had the eeprom changed, then yes, it will probably prevent the file from running. If you've already Xtreme'd it, then the problem is your editing of the file. (No, I don't have one I can send you.)
Bubble, you got PM, and no I'm not asking for the file.

I have a question about this... If someone DID have this "holy grail" boot299.btl file, with the <disallowed content edited by JJBliss> - and one were running 2.5.2 of the xtreme software, and then installed the mod'd boot299.btl into the /etccombo dir, is that all there is to installing this crazy mod?
EDIT:
Circumventing forum policy with : cool: or by using terms like "if" and "had" are no-nos...

I'm sick of seeing these ****ing questions all the time. There needs to be some way to automatically block any post with bootXXX.btl in it. Enough already.

Well, I'm not asking for the file either but was wondering if a new one is needed if updating to 2.5.2? I use one now with 2.5 and I need to get my locals back but don't want to lose it. Will the old file work with the new update??

If you want locals you need to upgrade to 2.52... that's all there is to it.

TheGoldenDroid: search, the answer to your specific question is out there.
I am shutting down this thread. Nothing productive has come out of it, and its enticing people to break the rules.
