Before anything else, I have read these forums for the past 2 weeks and all I have to say is THANK YOU ALL SOOO MUCH! I did exactly what you said and READ, READ, READ. What did it get me? I hell of a lot of knowledge and a step up from being a complete noob!
I have decided to join the TIVO hacking ranks and plan on purchasing my TIVO tomorrow (Phillips dsr-7000 I believe). I have also purchased a usbm-100 Ethernet to USB, stereo to serial, and a new HDD. I also have gained all the files necessary. I plan on going with the kravin setup and BlissTerPopper upgrade.
As for my question,
I have no worries about the installation; however I have some questions about the Dtv P4 card. I know that HU can be used (due to a software script), and I haven't been able to find a tutorial on this as of yet. I'm looking for some sort of tutorial that mainly just discusses how to go from Tivo accepting P4 to HU. (I know it’s simple but I did not see it in the Tutorial Thread). Many TXT files with the scripts give info on how to install, but not what they actually do. Also I am wondering about maintaining this (If I block software upgrades and other things with the scripts, will I be ok?). Finally, I see that some scripts must be manually set through the bash on power up every time, and yet some can be called up on auto. In the case of the “no scramble”, if that ran auto on every boot up, would that cause any problems (are their any downfalls if I do this)? I know that if you had scramble files on there b4 you run that script you will lose them. However if all the files on your Tivo are descrambled, would they still be affected? TIA to ALL the great members of this board! I hope someday I can help others out like you do.
Cheers!
PS: I tried to make sure that nothing illegal was asked here, and please keep this thread from being locked and deleted hehe!
:D
PPS, is it illegal to ask how you can clone your p4 information to a HU card?

ok, but the blissterpopper is a poor choice, since its not for seiries 2 tivos (the dsr 7000 is a series 2).

check the series 2 faq section for the answer to this one.

in general, the earliest threads (and initial posts in those threads) about a given hack describe what the hack. after those first posts, most of the time the thread switches to support and feature additions. the sticky threads have a few posts which describe hacks, but most of the stuff is how-tos (since thats what is requested more often)
Also I am wondering about maintaining this (If I block software upgrades and other things with the scripts, will I be ok?).
If you prevent upgrades, then most of the stuff is maintinence free. however, you need to be aware that changes could occur which require an upgrade (such as a change in locals handling). in that situation, you would need to upgrade yourself.

thats how most people run it. of course, since you are buying an s2, the hack is applied in the hackinit via kmem, not noscramble.o as is used on s1 units.

nope.

yup, thats a dtv/card hacking issue. no go on this board

YEAH... What mrblack51 said.
But also, KRavEN's packages are for series 1 DTivo as well.
Neither BlissTerPopper nor KRavEN's upgrade will work for you.

Thanks for the great posts! :)
Any recomendations then on a rig for my machine? I'm just looking for a no scramble, Simple set up (other apps welcome of course). Obviously anything beginner to intermediate, and if it's ok on these boards a shopping list (list scripts or bulk packs you think would be a good bet) would be great. If not, no worries! :)

That I am! :) But hey, I know my mistakes and have figured them out. I did so much reading I just had things mixed up. I am going to use the Html Tutorial sticky @ the top of the page this friday and saturday and get back to you.
One question I had is, when transfering tivo files to the pc, what kind of speeds do you get. Obviously you can go with the serial, usb to ethernet, or a that TIVO LAN card. From your opinion, is that lan worth it?
:( sorry if this thread annoyed any of you (especially mr. black). All the hacking info is right here, but it's hard to find just good converstations about certain things. So many people post in threads that a lot of times it just jumps to an off topic.

if you are new to this dont get the dsr-7000. It is simple as heck to hack a series one and you can see by reading the newbie and this forum the problems newcommers have. Stop reading this category and start reading the series 2 category if thats the series you want to play with. Most folks that are new have way too much trouble with the new tivos. Maybe you should reread the stickys in series 2 category and just click the highlighted links in Mr. Blacks posts. They will take you right there. You can read all day but if you dont understand what your reading its worthless.

I agree, I could've done the series 1, but honestly nothing should come easy. It's like picking on the kid 2 years younger than you, of course it's easy and a great laugh, but is it really worth it?
I ended up getting my TIVO about 15 minutes ago and a 80gig WD. I read that the TIVO has a problem when the WD is in master mode, but putting the jumpers on CS works. Why is that?
I still have it in the box (total virgin), but should I update the software b4 cloning or after?

I have had a problem w/ single drive WD's when "master" was selected rather than "master (single drive)" Other than that, I don't know of any issues.
I would backup the drive before doing anything to it. As a matter of fact, I recommend not modifying the original drive at all if you don't have to. Since you are new at this, it is possible that it may take you some time to get up and running. Having the original drive may give you something to fall back on if you run into problems and want to be able to watch TV.

Alright guys, today is the day!
I have everything ready to go and we'll see how it comes out. I'm going to stick to the tutorial, however do you need to have a subscription to update your TIVO software? (reason being is I didn't have time to activate it and I'm doing it with a friend who doesnt' have DTV (however an expert with Linux). If so, should I just download an image from twinbrothers of an updated S2?
Step1 clone tivo HDD
step2 clone tivo to newHDD
step3 update (fingers crossed)
step4 hack away!

Thanks to everyone! :) so far everything is going great, bios was written, files were placed, and all in all everything went smooth. However we are seeing a black flicker screen between the screens as told, however it was too quick and none of us saw writting. The serial cable is working however we are not getting a BASH screen nor a connnection. Any ideas?
*PS this is a virgin box (which means setup hasn't been done yet)so would the bash come up on that?

(edit dupe)
Inside my TIVO dsr7000 I found that the remote wire was not yellow, and was a white pc ribbon. I don't know if this is known already but it was a lot easier to dodge and very strong.

The flicker indicates that it's rebooting, I believe (not the full normal restart, just reloading the kernel). When it does so, BASH_ENV is ignored. I saw this when I was trying to run a U5 kernel with a 3.1.0 root; it went away when I matched U5 kernel and root. (I then used monte to get back to 3.1.0.)
BTW, what do you mean "BIOS was written"?
