Not too sure where to ask this and I did a search for likely sounding subjects but to no avail...
My entire CD collection is stored as MP3s (and some WMA) on a box that runs FreeBSD. They are currently visible to my PC and my Turtle Beach AudioTron using Samba.
Now that my Tivo is hacked and has network connectivity, it would be nice to be able to replace the AudioTron's with the Tivo.
In other words, I want to stream the MP3s and WMA to the Tivo, and have a UI on the TV screen.
Has anyone done any work on anything like this?

i'm itching for the same thing. without a cross-compiling env set up, i'm useless.
i'd need...
samba for s2dtivo
a UI control for the boob-tube (is this possible?)
if someone knows how this could be done and needs a couple more eyes, i'd gladly volunteer dev hours
clarification:
the ideal setup is...
sleeper/killinit/hacked s2dtivo image mounts an existing samba share
a screen to browse the mp3 repository (ala HMO)
stereo output from the tv of streamed audio.

I assume you have already ruled out HMO yet (Home Media Option) due to the lack of Linux media server support? If you would not mind using Windows on your media server, this works well (I use it). You will need to move to software version 4.01b-02, but this will provide you the ability to listen to music and view photos located on a PC server.

The JavaHMO media server software runs fine on linux. http://javahmo.sourceforge.net/. I'm still using version 1.2. I don't think the 2.0 Beta is ready for primetime on Linux yet.

is it possible to drop 4.01b-02 on a monte'd disk? if so, do you know how i can find it?

Doh, I forgot about JavaHMO!! I actually had it installed at one point.
As for 4.01b, you will need to do a monte to get it to work. The reason is that there is currently no killhdinitrd for 4.01b. There are two ways to go. First, you can use the old Sleeper method modified for 4.01bg. Look here. (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36361)
A better way to go, but which has a steeper learning curve, is to do your own monte in which you boot into a killhdinitrd partition, then monte over into a killinitrd 4.01b. Just search and you will find topics discussing how to do it.
