alot of people have this problem. Not all cables run the same way. The best way is to buy the serial end inner and outer cover and get a 2 ended stereo extension plug. A mono will only have 2 wires. Read the 2nd page of the How tos and follow the colors to the right pin #. Works like a dream, OR 9th tee.

Thanks for answering, but I verified the pin setting with a multimeter. They are set as described in the How To article.

Any other thoughts???

Why did you post again, the same question after your post has been moved appropriately to the newbie section? Just a piece of advice - cross posting the same question to mutiple areas won't get people to help you any faster (in fact, it ticks some people off so they won't help you).

What does:

9600 - 115000, 8,N,1

mean? Did you mean set the baud rate to 9600 and then 115200 (because it can't be set to a range!)? The serial port on the Tivo after Xupgrade will run at 115200. Did you go to your settings for the COM port in Windows (I assume Windows, but you give us no details of your OS) and change the baud rate from the default 9600 to 115200?

You also know the pinout of the fermale end of a 9 pin serial cable looks like this (looking into the connector):

5   4   3   2   1
  9   8   7   6

Is that how you wired the cable?

1) I'm running Windows XP Pro.
2) Com1 is operating correctly
3) I set the port speed at 115000

4) 8,N,1 refers to:
Data : 8
Parity: none
Stop bit: 1

flow control is set to none

5) I checked that the Pin settings were correct by performing a loopback test. On the pin that plugs into the Tivo, I crossed the tip with the middle ring (not the bottom) and was then able to see characters that I was typing. (couldn't see them before the cross)

6) I wired according to the pin numbers identified inthe above post:

5 4 3 2 1
9 8 7 6

pin 2 -> Tip
pin 3 -> Mid
pin 5 -> Bottom

I''m really stuck. Do I need to reboot the Tivo? Will have to reset all of my xPlusz settings of I do?

I really just didn't know what you meant by 9600 - 115000. Sorry, I don't know what else to check.

Finally...

I just rebooted the Tivo Box, and the prompt came up!!

Sorry about the 150000. What I meant to say was 115,200.

Amazing how frustrating this can be.... :)
