Can I buy an after market hard drive and swap or add to my existing Tivo unit?

Any IDE drive will work as long as it's the exact same size as the original Tivo drive or larger. 5400 rpm drives are preferable for less heat and noise generation but are getting harder to come by. Stick with the major brands (i.e. Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, etc.) for the best results. The newer Seagate 7200rpm drives have fluid bearings and run very quiet. Get one in a retail box for a 3-year warranty vs. an OEM drive that is only guaranteed for a year. Hard drives used in a Tivo are worked harder than if they were in a PC and as such are more prone to failure. Back up your original drive before upgrading so you'll have a recovery image to use in the event that the drive does fail. Get a copy of MFS Tools 2.0 and Hinsdale's How To for all the info you'll need on upgrading a Tivo hard drive. You'll find the links for both files in the How Tos Only sticky and also at the 9th Tee website.
