What do i do next? The direction I got say unplug it after it say lookign for satellite link than I can upgrade to 2.5.2.

How long should the upgrade be? I have waiting for like 20 minutes now.

I did the upgrade for a friend and it went smoothly but when it my turn it all goes back

I'd give it anywhere from 30-60 minutes to complete the database update. 20 minutes is a bit short from what I remember.

If it never completes this screen you gotta let us know where this came from.
1. Are you original owner?
2.Did you just buy it(ebay maybe) and was it working before the attemp at extreme 2.5?
3. If you are original owner do you use the phone line plogged in?

probably a bad modem, BTW, just remove the test

the first time I did it, I waiting for an 1hr and 30 minutes.

This is wierd, I try using a difference drive to see maybe it could be my 160 gig but it happen to the same thing for my 80 gigs, it will freeze up getting database, this will take a few more seconds. I wait for 15 minute and it still stay that way.

What is really wierd, is not i put in the orginal 40 gig back in, i get hang up at "power up" it will sit there for like 10 minutes,

I have a question, when you upgrade the 40 and added a 80- to it, do you need the 80 gig to be install before the ssytem can boot up?

thanks

Do you have a serail cable? I bet 10 bucks it has a bad modem. You need to rem it out. THe question about the 40 + 80 gig is you HAVE to bless the second drive when you install 2.5 xtreme. If yoiu dont it wont work, or you need to use mfs tools to bless it, but I wouldnt try that right now, yor having enough trouble with it working with 1 drive.........if you dont have a serail cable make one or get one, yoiu need it now.

So a bad modem will hang up the system?

I order a console cable so I should have it by tomorrow. So once I get the console cable, what do I do?

I will try to console into the tivo and than what?

How to I stop it from check up on the modem? How do I turn off the modem? OR should I remove the driver for it?

thanks

I should get a bash prompt after 2 minute right?

This suck

This is what happen, I got my friend tivo and I rebuild a new 160 gig hard drive and it work like a charm, I got it up and running within 30 to an hr.

So once it done, I take the hard drive and place it in mine and now I am stuck with "updating database" again, I keep getting stuck here

So I got my cable and try to use term pro and get nothing but junk.

This is what I did,
I use console port COm1 and set everything the same 9600, 8,1, N

HOw do I get it up and running on the console prot now

Ok here what I have done so far.

I got a friend tivo which is the same brand and etc. I build the OS (2.5.2 xtreme) it work fine for his tivo but than when I install it on mine I get updating dtabase a few more second, it will hagn there

i thought it was the modem, so i follow a threa saying get rid of the modemtest file in tvbin. and still no luck. I think it might be tuner but it was working fine before i touch the tivo.

If it the tuner how do I replace them, and which one? IF tuner 1 is bad, cant I just replace it with tuner 2 so it will be up and runner or it has to be both tuner in at once?

Newbiepower, Did you ever figure out what was wrong. I have the exact same problem, My kernel files look identical to yours as well as the tvlog files.(last lines of each file) My hard drive will work in my other tivo and i have rm modemtest. Also this hung on just a few more seconds with software version 3.1 on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, first of all, this thread is painful to read. Its better to type slower and PROOF read what your writing, its really hard to understand what your trying to do...........
.......Now, if this tivo came to you with 3.1, and it worked, by worked I mean booted up and got into menus, and all you did was put 2.5 on there, the only difference is 3.1 doesn NOT have modemtest, and 2.5 and 252 both have it. Now are you sure your going into /tvbin and doing rm modemtest?

If you did this, and still no boot up, there could be ALOT of things going on. Most likely, is bad lnbp chip or tuner. The only way to really troubleshoot is remove one component at a time, and see if it will boot. When it does, thats the problem. Unfortunately, most people dont have the skills to do that work. Not to mention anything on IC2 bus thats bad will stick at almost there. The tuners and chips are most likely, then the modem controller (U13) then could be ANY of the big chips.

The first thing I would do if I were you, would be to put 3.1 back on there and see what happens. Also note, that stuck on updating database after install is REALLY suck at almost there screen. The welcome screen comes off the board, so if it sticks there its not initializing the IDE circuits. If it gets to almost there, its booting but theres hardware trouble. Thats how you tell the difference.

edit: post your kernel log please

I had the exact same problem (frustrating i know)
mine was from a fried modem. To fix:

rename /tvbin/modem to something else and reboot
