Hey folks, not sure if anyone else has run into this or not, but wanting to start a thread on it if not.

Here is my situation. Running a Dell Access point with my DSL service. Only problem with DSL and PPPOE is that it changes IP's frequently (hence dynamic).

Anyone have a solution that will e-mail the IP every time DHCP picks up a new IP? Would be cool to have a utility that would sit on a windows box and monitor the IP from the ISP and then e-mail it out to a yahoo/hotmail box for worldwide access.

That way TivoWeb would always be accessible.

Of course a static IP would be ideal, but then everyone would have to pay for a business DSL connection. Not interested in that and my ISP doesn't offer static IP's for residential.

Catch my drift?

Comments suggestions would be appreciated.

there are a number of places, such as no-ip.com, that provide a dns service for those with dynamic ips. you run the software on your pc and it will update their servers entry if your ip changes. thus, you could always reach your network via something like mysexynetwork.no-ip.com. some routers even support these services internally, so they can sense if their ip changes, and notify the server.

your email solution is doable as well

Nice site BTW black. Thanks for the info.

How cool is that little utility. It will FTP an html document to your web server so it's accessible worldwide! It will also email you the results via an SMTP server of your choice with authentication options!

This software only costs $15 bucks too. Not bad.

I downloaded the shareware and all my tests were successful.

Tip for the software:
In the FTP path make sure you use this format

directory/

Took me like 10 minutes to figure that out. I kept putting /directory/ and /directory but it didn't like that. If you put /directory/filename it just makes a huge long filename that you can't ever find. Might save you some time. The HTML document is named ipchange.htm

once completed you can go to www.yourdomain.com/ipchange.htm with your dynamic IP!

You can set it to monitor every minute or 99 minutes.

Good luck!

I just thought I'd give everyone another option if they were considering having their own domain. The service is EasyDNS and their dynamic DNS info can be found here...

http://www.easydns.com/dynamicdns.php3

I have run my domains (TRILIGHT.COM and TRILIGHT.NET) through them for many years. It is, hands down, the BEST service for the best price I have ever seen. I know this sounds like a "commercial" or something but I just can't say enough good things about them. When I had a problem (turned out to be my fault anyway), the president called me long distance from Canada within the hour just to make sure I was ok. That kind of service is impossible to find these days.

Their service will even let you do e-mail mapping so even if you didn't have your domain hosted somewhere, you could tell people to email you at "joe@mydomain.com" and it would automatically get forwarded to a hotmail account or something.

Anyway, it's just another option to consider. Nothing like having your own domain. :D At only $35 per YEAR, everyone should have their own domain. hehe
