Is there something that can be checked to make sure that noscramble is in fact set and operating?

Yes. Turn it off and see if you can play back recorded streams when tivoapp is trying to run them through the descrambler.

on series 1 boxes, you can just type "cat /proc/modules" at the bash prompt and look for "noscramble" in the list.

Just for the newbies...
That would mean commenting out the kmem entry in rc.sysinit.author, or wherever you have placed the 'kmem' command,
with #kmem...
I switched back and forth a couple of times just to make sure :)
