intial setup

I've seen several posting that a phone is not needed except for intial setup.

Does anyone know what it specifically does during this setup?

it depends on which type of unit you are talking about. for directivos, all the call does is get your local number so it can dial in for uploading your viewing habits and such. for standalone units, it does that, but also gets the various television providers for your area, and then downloads guide data.
