I have a directivo that has 3.1.x software on it already and I was able to increase the capacity, but I can't figure out where to start with the other upgrades. Namely, I'd like to get the tivonet working, and add Tivoweb and the noscramble.o

I've read a lot of readmes and how-tos but they all seem to suggest that the unit has 2.5 on them and you upgrade that with some 2.5 sw and then run something else to force it to 3.1... Can you start with a 3.1 machine? Do I downgrade it first? Do I really need to flash the prom? Will my upgrades be blown away eventually? Does that mean I need to open this thing a few times a year?

If someone could just give me a boiled down answer like:
Use TivoThingy 2.5 and then YippieTivo 3.1
That would be awesome. I appoligize in advance for asking a question like this, but the how-tos seem to assume you would never have a 3.1 unit pre-upgrade.

Your best bet would be to install 2.5Xtreme and then upgrade to 3.1 using Superzap's upgrade. I've put together a tutorial on doing this to upgrade to 2.5.2 but the process is exactly the same. You'll find the tutorial in the DirecTV Tivo hacking forum on page 4 of the How Tos Only sticky thread. Check out Superzap's upgrade sticky thread in the same forum and get the readme file for his upgrade to learn all of the commands you'll need. Both the 2.5.2 and 3.1 upgrades are in the same xupgrade file so all you have to do is substitute the 3.1 commands when it calls out 2.5.2.
