I am currently trying to hack my HDVR2, and under the Kernel Replacement section, I get to the command -
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/c/dt2_3.1.0.mfs /dev/hdc
and I get a message saying the backup target is too small for image to fit?

Has anyone else encountered this and what did they do (besides switching to a bigger hard drive?)

Thanks

Are you trying to restore to the Original Tivo drive or to a new larger drive? What size is the drive?

Did you use the -f option when you made the mfsbackup and what value? What was the exact backup command that you used?

Depending upon your answers, you may not want the -s and/or -x options.

It is possible to get this error under certain conditions.

Trying to restore to a new drive, a Western Digital 40 gig drive.

mfsbackup -f 4138 -6so /mnt/c/dt2_3.1.0.mfs /dev/hdc

This was the command I used for the backup.

I am pretty new to this, but I learn things pretty quick.

Try to restore without the -s 127 (since you have no reason to increase the swap file, and the hard drive is 40 gigs - this will make the backup image too large during restore).

Also - not all 40 gig drives are equal - it could actually be smaller than the original.

Try

mfsrestore -zpi /mnt/c/backup.mfs /dev/hdc

No -s, No -x.

Sleeper. tried both those ways, no luck. I discovered that my Tivo HD was just a tiny bit bigger than the one I was trying to restore the image to. But this is still crap. The software sucks!! Not being able to take a 1.4 gig image and put it on a 40 gig HD is crap, and why?? Because it not only tries to move the image, but the blank space too. If we were able to use Ghost, we wouldn't have this problem!!

playthisgame,

I understand your frustration but please don't vent at me. I did not write the utility - I'm just trying to help.

If you have the original drive you may want to try mfsbackup with the -v and -s options. There is no guarantee this will work.

Of course, you could simply purchase a larger drive.

Regards,

S.

Sleeper, I was in no way venting at you. I appreciate your help. I'm just upset with the way the software was made, thats all.

I'm having the same issue, trying to play with a "test" tivo i bought, it has the stock 40 gig drive, and I can't get any of the v4.0 images to fit on it :(

wow.. been over a year since I posted that.. what I did was stoop to picking up a 120GB hard drive. Worked perfectly. And now with the cheap price of HDs, its really the way to go..

My TIVO has been sitting unplugged for the past 6+ months though.. :( .. ever since the P3 stream stopped.. I miss it alot.. and its more illegal in Canada to legitimately subscribe to DTV than to "test" it.. so I'm stuck..
The other PVRs don't compare to Tivo at all..

DO..

PTV has a 40 gig image, which is cheaper than a hard drive for a test Tivo (not sure what 40 gigs it will work on though)
