Its like some of the lines are off a bit and its very noticeable when there is fast motion involved. How can this be fixed?

Use a player that has a deinterlacing filter (for example, MPlayer or WinDVD). Or, burn to a DVD or SVCD and play it back in your settop player. It might even work to use TV Out on your computer, if you have that. Otherwise, you'll have to reencode the clip.

OK, I used virtual dub to do the deinterlace, but the sound is out of sync even in the source mpg file that was directly extracted...it starts out fine at the beginning but later on it starts to get out of sync and their voices arent at the same time as their mouths moving onscreen. What is causing this?

fixed that too! if anyone else has this problem and uses virtual dub, go to the video then frame rate and check the box so that the video frame rate and audio durations match

The mpg is an MPEG2 stream, which normal vdub does not understand. There is a spinoff of vdub called VirtualDubMod, which can handle MPEG2 streams (including VOB's, etc). It is available on SourceForge.

Personally, I use AviSynth 2.5.2 to frameserve into vdub. There are MPEG2 decoder filters available, some of which also make use of a d2v project file created with DVD2AVI.

Hope this helps.

You can also load ty files directly in to virtualdubMod using duo's ty directshow filter. just use vdubmod's 'open file via AVISynth' option and then pick DirectShow as the Template.
it's buggy (the directshow filter is still at alpha stage) but it does work.

I'm having problems finding the duo's ty directshow filter. Can someone please help me.
Thank you,
John
