After lurking here for quite some time, and reading a whole bunch of HOWTOs, I'm still not clear on whether this is possible.

What I'm essentially trying to do is to extract the video from a stock DirecTivo (DSR7000) without having to install anything in the box. Obviously, I will take the drive out and connect it to a Linux box, but there are two questions that still remain unclear:

1. Will I be able to get the FSIDs without any of the tools on the Tivo?
2. Will I be able to unscramble the MPEG file after extraction?

Well, you could pull off #1 by putting the hard disk in a PC and then booting to linux and running tridges tools, but #2 is as of yet impossible.

#1) yes

#2) trick question - it's a tystream not mpeg. apples & oranges

#2a) you can restore / watch a scrambled recording on the same tivo, or a different tivo with a bit of crypto chip surgery

#2b) no you won't be able to convert the scramble into mpg
