View Full Version : Substantially lower quality: Dtivo to DVD

New to the process, read all the primers, coasterized zero discs (thanks to all) in taking tys from my Dtivo to DVD+R/+RW.

My main (Toshiba) DVD player won't play the RWs or +Rs I've burned. Tomorrow it gets a firmware upgrade.

In the meantime, I tried DVDs in the kids Playstation 2 and was appalled at the quality: playoff baseball game was pixellated at times and grainy and just plain stunk. Substantially worse than the source (which I think looks great at 480x480, but the eyes aren't what they were).

So, was I foolish to assume that a DVD "copy" would be as good as the 480x480 source?

Or, is there something wacky with playstation 2 playback?

Your mileage? (Dtivo to DVD crowd)

Thanks!

As long as you're sure you aren't re-encoding the video, it's probably just the way your PS2 is handling the video. My DVD's are the exact same perfect quality they were when recorded from the satellite stream. :)

Trilight,

You're right -- put the DVD-R/RWs in a player that could play them back and bingo.

I was really surprised at the bitrate: variable, as the feed from sats is variable, but as high as 5.1/5.2 on occasion.

Bottom line: the copies look as great as the sat source, as you said.

Thanks
