View Full Version : MFSstream vs. TyTools/TyServer, is one better than the other?

Is there any difference in extracting the video files from a S1 Dtivo (2.5.2) using Tivoweb and MFSstream vs. installing the Tyserver and using tytools?

I have noscramble on, tivoweb on, mfsstream on. And I'm able to log on to tivoweb and list the shows/recordings and click on one and it begins downloading.

Is there any advance (speed or otherwise) in using the tyserver method?

Thanks in advance.

If your extractions are small enough and you're using windows, you can use "FC 1.ty 2.ty /B" at the command prompt to compare any differences, if any. I've found no differences between TyStudio and TyTool extractions.

To find your extraction speed and determine your best option, try a download meter like DU Meter (http://www.dumeter.com/).

I can tell you now, TyTools7R10 is faster than TivoWeb and MFSstream. My Dtivo has a Airnet card in it, so its not as fast as you wired guys.

TivoWeb + MFSstream = 350kb/sec - 400kb/sec
TyTools7R10 = 650kb/sec - 700kb/sec

Thats according to my LCD display monitoring my Ethernet card in my PC. (awesome device and software btw.. jaLCD fyi)

BUT: is there any difference between the two? a .ty file is a .ty file is a .ty file? ??????

You are getting 700kb/sec on a 802.11b network? Very impressive! I didn't even think that was theoretically possible. Have you timed a full file transfer instead of relying on a speed monitor? For me, even file transfers between two computers on a B network are less than 500kb/sec.

I have not timed a full transfer yet- but I will. My current problem is for somereason - more often than not, my Dtivo locks up while transfering files  I actually have to remove the power plug, no hard keys or remote control keys work (respond).

Any idea's on that?

The mfs_stream that TivoWeb uses is a custom front-end I wrote for mfs_export to make it look like extractstream so that it could be used by other tools. Most of these tools have gone the way of the dodo...

The code however is exactly the same as what is inside of TyTool. However there might be some differences. I don't know if anyone has updated things since then. I don't use TivoWeb that way but gosquad or someone else might have updated it a bit.

Basically my point is just that they are "close" to the same thing. The networking and the way it is used is all that really differs but I also see speed differences.

mfs_ftp appears to use the same mfs_Stream program for pure tystream extractions. So it would be very close as well. However it is my understanding that there is a bunch more going on in there as you can put streams back and that requires information that I don't think is being extracted right now.

I have no idea how TyStudio does what it does. I believe the embeded things just like I did but I don't know what is embedded.

But I would also agree with the other comment. A tystream is a tystream. As long as you can process what you get you are good.

I can verify this ~300kb difference in speed. I usually get about that much faster extraction using TyTool via my TurboNET. I average around 1.5Mbps.

That makes perfect sense since you are using a channel with a BW of 10000kb/s. With 802.11b the usable BW is only about 500kb/s. Worse if you are using WEP. Now 802.11g should be as good as a wired connection when extracting from a Turbonet and WET54g. I haven't heard of anyone confirming this yet.

No, I meant that with TyTool, I get about 1.5Mbps. With others, I get around 1.2Mbps. This would coincide with the ~300kbps difference Toaster notices on his WiFi. It's not the tech I was referring to; it's the speed difference in the tools.
