I made these a while back when I was going to archive some Enterprise stuff. Unfortunately, my 100GB drive died before I got around to extracting them. You live and learn, I guess. ;) Anyway, I thought I'd post them here if someone wanted to use them. They are made from High Definition screen captures of the Enterprise intro sequence.

I was going to post these in the "TyTool Background" thread but they can really be used in any DVD authoring software. Also, there are widescreen versions if you happen to be making a 16:9 menu. Since I never got a chance to put them on disc, let me know if anything is wrong with them and I'll correct it.

Nice, but don't those WS ones need to be anamorphically compressed to the normal resolution?

They are already the normal aspect ratio for widescreen. You set the 16:9 flag in the DVD authoring software for your menu and it will then be displayed as such. If on a 4:3 TV it will, of course, be displayed with black bars that the DVD player puts on there. If on a 16:9 TV, it will be displayed full sceen.

These are pretty cool...
What did you use to create them?

But in pixel terms widecreen and 4:3 are the same; both 720 x 576 over here in PAL land, 720 x 480 for you. The difference is just the way the TV displays them (effectively with different shaped pixels). So surely a WS background bitmap should be the normal 4:3 pixel count, but an anamorphically compressed image?

Or does your DVD authoring package rescale them internally from the 864 x 480 that you have used to 720 x 480?

@tivomaster: They were widescreen HD screen captures converted to the appropriate size/contrast/brightness/etc. using Adobe Photoshop.

@sanderton: I used the NTSC Widescreen DVD setting in Photoshop for the 864x480 size. Here's the math comparison... 16:9 = 16/9 = 1.78 which is ~= 1.8 = 864/480

I'm sure the aspect ratio is right on a PC monitor with square pixels. But a WS DVD is not 864 x 480 with square pixels , it's 720 x 480 with rectangular pixels. Have you successfully created a WS DVD menu with a 864 x 480 BMP?

Actually, both of these effectively equal the same thing when it comes to this situation. These are static images and not moving pictures. Photoshop only works with square pixels (AFAIK). As such, you work at 864x480 in Photoshop and set the 16x9 flag on the menu item in your authoring software for proper final display.

I made them for someone who requested widescreen versions at the time I was working on them. He never reported having a problem with them. Have you tried them yourself and they are not displayed correctly? Let me know what they look like on your widescreen TV. Thanks!

Thanks jdiner! As I mentioned above, I did not get a chance to use them unfortunately. If you feel anything needs more/less saturation or constrast, etc for readability just let me know. I can change them up pretty easily.

No, they don't work directly in my authoring software - they import letterboxed with black bars top and bottom. Work of a moment to resize them to 720 x 480 though.

They will certainly improve the look of my Enterprise DVDs!
