Hacking TiVo- the expansion, enhancement, and development starter kit

Jeff Keegan, ExtremeTech division of Wiley, about $20 on Amazon

I would rate myself as a TiVo intermediate
grade hacker -- have a Series2 I have not hacked and a couple of hacked Series1's, one
with ethernet.

I like the book. A lot of the material could be
learned by reading this forum and tivocommunity. But here it's all together,
with latest software revs or pointers.

The chapter on extraction was good for me.
This had been a goal when I got the TiVo's, but I'd never quite gotten there. Now in a weekend's time, extraction is setup and working.

Both Series1 and Series2 are covered.
However, Jeff shies away from discussing
exploits to get bash prompts, etc on Series2.
He also doesn't discuss in any detail methods of loading one's own listing data
with out a subscription ( and I don't mean stealing service here --
I'm thinking of things like xmlTv and tivoguide.

If you have a Series1 and want to play around, the book is good. If you have a Series2, you may get frustrated........
and buy a Series1 so you can join the fun.

Best, Pcompact

and agree with you pretty much. I can understand why he avoided the Series 2 and stuck pretty much with the Series 1 units. I still consider the book a good investment. :)
